^ Possibly, but it seemed so deliberate in its inclusion that it made it look like there was at least a fairly well thought out concept floating around out there. Thinking about it, I can understand why the Fairmont would want extra room on that floor.

It must have been the report from last fall that had some Perkins + Will designs.

Here's one image from a news story about it... it's not the image I was thinking of specifically, but it shows an extension to the Fairmont. Although it shows other nonexistent buildings I don't remember seeing, so maybe it's more conceptual than anything resembling an actual plan.

The comments in the Free press were 95% against opening Portage and Main except for the East Portage intersection.

Short memory. He got elected because he was really the only choice. No one was listening to his platform, all anyone could hear was "not Judy".

Jenny M. got up on the stage to intro Harlequin at the Hi Neighbour Festival, she told the crowd that if elected, P&M will not open. The large crowd went wild. This will indeed be an election issue and a deeply divisive one, whichever way you think.

No mention that I care, unlikely I will cross that intersection again. Just telling facts.

I catered my son's 30th back in April. About 45 people, all 30 somethings, except for a half dozen of us older people. Not one individual there, no one was for the opening. All but a few live within the old COW boundries, mostly IT professionals and engineers. Anecdotal I know, but it reflects robertocarlos' statement.

Once the thing opens, maybe it won't feel like we live in a city of 800,000 chicken littles. Although it will definitely take a while for people to get over it.

So much potential to be something special and we're actually debating the merits of this.....

We all know that the average Joe Winnipegger is against it. The average Joe Winnipegger is also usually completely out of touch with planning, urbanism and what modern, successful cities do to thrive. If we just did whatever the populist mob wanted every time, we'd have an arena in Headingly with 20,000-car parking lot, cycling would be illegal, Winnipeg Transit would be disbanded and there would be programs in place to aggresively demolish buildings downtown to make way for piles of unnecessary cheap surface parking everywhere.

People are against it because they have bought into all these kooky theories that armageddon is going to happen if we open it and they frankly don't know what they're talking about.

Makes me wonder why Bowman didn't release the traffic study he comissioned. There was an engineering analysis done which was based on fact. It was kept secret. Why do you think it was kept from the public?

Each Joe Winnipegger has one vote each for mayor.

Candidates who also were not Judy:

RFO
Gord Steeves
David Sanders
Paula Havixbeck

But the one who advocated most staunchly for opening Portage and Main (and expanded BRT, for that matter) ended up winning.

Steeves blew it. Sanders had no hope. Paula was not in it to win. Fear of Judy got Bowman elected.

It will be an interesting race, that's for sure. Jenny has good people behind her.

Part of the problem is that the conversation surrounding P+M is being stifled by the shouting of its opponents.

Winnipeggers always complain about their city compared to more exciting urban centres, but clearly don't acknowledge that the positions they hold counteract what made those other cities great. Everyone suddenly fancies themselves a genius without knowing a damned thing.

Agreed. I voted for Bowman and actually wasn't that much for opening the intersection back then, and i certainly thought his 30B RT plan was stupid. I voted against Judy.

No regrets. I'm now in favour of opening P+M up (not because of Bowman) and while we did need some degree of RT, I still think Bowman is a dolt.

And these people are why we can't have nice things.

Probably because it says it will slow traffic by a couple of minutes and they know people will overreact wildly as if taking another 2 mins to drive down Main st will bring about the end times. People lost their minds over them just doing the study in the first place. I don't think I've ever seen another city where people so fiercely oppose change just for the sake of opposing change. If the status quo was working better for us maybe I would get it.

It is pretty widespread. Very few actually want it opened. As I said the next election will be fun to watch.

But certainly not as fun as yesterday's election!

Could be but we'll never know will we? If the report's analysis was that benign why not release it?

Transit saw the report and we all know their reaction to it.
