This has been a recurring issue. Many of the same Quebec politicians trying to erase displays of religion from the public domain (by, for example, banning religious headgear) support maintaining Christian displays.

See, for example, the crucifix overlooking the legislature while they debate erasing religion (read: non-Christian religions) from the public domain: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/nat...bly-amid-bill-62-debate/article36700123/

Or the crucifix in a hospital: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/quebec-city-hospital-threat-crucifix-arrest-1.4004482

I personally do not have issues with displays of religion in the public domain (provided that (i) it is not endorsed or displayed or funded by the ostensibly secular government and (ii) it otherwise complies with generally applicable laws on obscenity, hate speech, etc.).

But Quebec's vaunted interpretation of secularism appears to be nothing more than raw tribalism. Beneath all the fancy concepts bandied about, their thinking seems to boil down to: We killed off the natives and established Christianity here as the predominant religion. Christianity must therefore continue to dominate. We will erase other religions from the public domain, while our hospitals and government offices glorify our lord and savior Jesus. We will pretend that this is motivated by lofty ideals of secularism rather than primitive tribalism.
You presume to educate me, a Quebecker, on these shopworn arguments and extraordinarily well-known references to the crucifix in the National Assembly (which I am not in support of), about banning religious headgear (which I am resolutely not in support of), but most of all, about the most secular province in the entire country (by far)?

Get back to me when we stop swearing on the bible in other parts of Canada, or having religious-denominated schools (Ontario), or when the Christian Heritage party is disbanded.

Some slide show that features a few Christian themes among a host of others, bothers you guys? Come fucking on.
Quebec-bashing, by a different label.

It's amazing how diminutive the financial district seems to have become from the waterfront.

All of those new buildings and not a single street you would want to walk down.

It probably will never be a pedestrian haven but have to give it a little time to mature at least. The park at the old York off-ramp is a good start.

Queen's Quay is quite pleasant through the Southcore area, and York street isn't bad, it's pretty solidly built up and quite busy with pedestrians from the tracks right down to the Lakefront.

I'll be back in a month so I'll check it out under nicer, summer conditions. Funny thing? I'm travelling with my gf, who has never been to Canada. She is really excited about Montreal, but secretly I think Toronto is the dark horse in terms of being her favourite city. Helps that she speaks that weirdly perfect Scandinavian English... but not a word of French.

The financial district and the Union station and York Street areas are finally connected to the waterfront minus the parking lots that used to dot that environment. As a result there's plenty of people walking in that area.

Seriously is. Perhaps the most underrated city in Canada.
