Denver having a flashier skyline and Denver being a unique city are in no way mutually exclusive. If relying on mediocre, low-budget architecture is the only way Denver can express any characateristic that sets us apart from other cities, then it is clear we have already lost the battle in our bid to remain unique and, furthermore, we're just shooting ourselves in the foot at this point.
"Not having an impressive skyline with standout buildings and illumination is what makes us unique!" is a sad and self-defeating argument that achieves nothing at the cost of spiting ourselves with a bland architectural aesthetic.
