i disagree to ethnicitize naming of any station. If you aboriginalize a station , then about Italian, French, Chinese.... ? This is a Vancouver, Canada east/west main traffic thoroughfare. Lets stick to functionality, name it to help people to find their way. If you insist in ethnicitize any name, please find a road or street somewhere else so nobody gets confused. Take emotion, sentimentality out of naming please.

In Calgary, some of the downtown street and avenue signs have the numbers applicable to that roadway first with the old name that it was originally given in brackets behind it. This concept could apply to the station names on the M. Line (English name first and the Aboriginal translation in brackets).

Precisely any street in downtown, west end, Burnaby , Richmond , Surrey ..... is fine. But please do not meddle with a main thorough fare.

So, if I'm a visitor and for some reason I only happen to know the old name in the bracket. I ask random people on the street for direction, and how many people would be able to help? Downtown is small enough so if I keep walking and walking, I may eventually find it. What if you expand this to a 6 to 10km area?

As far as I know, not even google map is able to help me there.

Yeah, it'd be like renaming an entire group of islands. Nobody would ever be able to remember what the new name is.

The station names should remain as the street names. Dumb names like "Olympic Village" station are already pretty misleading.

I would not be opposed to renaming the whole line if they could come up with something reasonable. A First Nations name would be great. Both Millenium and Evergreen are stupid names.

Would you prefer 2nd-Olympic Village instead? How about prefixing every station with the street they're on and a location, like Burrard-Royal Centre or Granville-Pacific Centre or 110th-Big Ass Parking Lot In The Middle of Nowhere?

I'm still struggling with "Ironworkers Memorial Bridge". To me, it's still just the "Second Narrows Bridge". If they don't name the stations after the cross streets then I'll be completely lost....

You guys are funny. 6th Ave would have been the most logical though. If I'm a tourist getting off a cruise ship, I think, "Hey, I want to go to Olympic Village and check it out, which train do I need to get..." You can see where this is going. Really, they should ride to Main St. on the Expo line. Instead they end up in the middle of a modular housing complex.

What I think should be the station names for the Broadway extension:

1) Great Northern Way (or Great Northern-Finning)
2) Mount Pleasant (without Main Street moniker, since that’ll be confusing with Main Street-Science World station)
3) Broadway City Hall
4) Oak-Hospital (or Oak-Fairview)
5) South Granville
6) Arbutus

Regarding the First Nations names be included as part of the reconciliation process, I think the best compromise would be to have those names in parenthesis ONLY appearing on the station name signs at the entrance of the station (similar to the Chinese characters at the entrance of Stadium-Chinatown station). Everything else should remain in English.

Station names should be named based on the street name or the neighbourhood the station is at, in order to remain clear, but at the same time, should not be a mouthful (C-Line station names are the absolute worst in this).

But that's only going to be useful to Canada Line riders - what's the point of the M-Line announcement saying "Broadway" when you're already on Broadway?

I think they'll just drop the street names and go with "Vancouver City Hall" or something.

A) Main Street-Science World isn't that much closer - the neighbourhood's basically centred halfway between the two.

B) Remember that OV is eventually going to stretch to Cambie too. I'm thinking that the Canada Line station will eventually be "Olympic Village West," with the downtown streetcar having OV Central and/or OV East stops.
