There are now giant planters along the sidewalk north of the Kingston, by the office tower (on Richards).

^^^ Those planters are rather pretty. They 'soften' the streetscape and add a touch of urbanity. I would like to see more around the central city;
provided of course they don't block the sidewalks.

Hopefully the rest of the green wall over the alley will grow like the first part did last summer and I'll have a little more green in my view.

I noticed that they've installed brackets in the blank column over the vents - so at least some planters will be installed there, too.

No kidding. They're literally planted under the canopy edge. This city's slavish adherence to affective landscaping needs a serious rethink. Stuff like the grass strips adjacent to curbs that turn into instant and permanent mud pits, now being replaced by either fake grass, pavers and the like being one such example.

Lilac trees can grow quite large. It will be interesting how they do. It'll smell really nice down there souring spring!

Unfortunately I've noticed smaller street trees like these tend to get broken off/vandalized.

One of the new Telus trees has already been destroyed, knocked out of its place and damaged.

It couldn't have been in place for more than a week.

What possible reason is there for it, beyond being a useless sack of skin?

Well, actually it looks like the sack of skin might have been driving something, or backing something up, I'm not sure. A crime against nature, at best.

There are some lilac trees on Smithe at Homer (the art gallery corner) and they are doing okay, but I think it has taken a while - those trees were replaced a few times maybe due to accidents.

Side note: on Seymour south of Robson, the ornamental pear trees finally looked impressive this year.

... also, the recent heat wave has done a number on some trees (including some of the Telus lilacs). On the Smithe side of 888 Hamilton, the leaves on a few big trees (same type as in the Amazing Brentwood fountain) had their leaves dry up - I noticed it on the walk in today because they smelled like dried tea leaves.

PS - the supports for the new column of planters on the alley greenwall look beefier than the previous ones.

I think it's just a decorative screen with wrought iron leaves being installed over the vents on the alley-side green wall.

Agreed! Too many yahoos in this city who love to urinate everywhere, litter or break public property. I think the penalty needs to be a lot stiffer.

We aren't allowed to ship regulars to the Fraser Valley anymore to get rid of them for a few days. Actually I don't think any of the provincial municipalities are allowed dumping repeat offenders at city/regional limits anymore.
