Many of us on SSP are intimately familiar with the big 3, someone visiting for the first time is unlikely to know the best spots, most online tourist listings have crap like the Bata shoe museum *facepalm* and the Science Center *blow my brains out*.

And why are people talking about the CBD, I never take people there. Anyway, I don't live in a world of theory. However you guys think people should behave, I'm merely sharing my experiences taking worldly, well travelled visitors on a tour of downtown Toronto. We take for granted what we have here, Toronto in 2018 has that wow factor few cities have, or maybe I'm just a good guide/host and know how to make people fall in love with this city

In another thread in the City Discussions section, a Toronto forumer who seems a bit sensitive about comments on his city, responded to a poster from another country who said there wasn't much to see there, with a long list of Toronto attractions that included both the shoe museum and the science centre, IIRC.

That was me responding to an arrogant London forumer who when informed that Toronto tourism had an all time record high in 2017 with over 43 million visitors, posted this:

Tourists or visitors? I would imagine there’s a lot more business travel to Toronto. But I can’t for the life of me think of anything one would go there to see.
So I merely listed the top attractions in the city based on reviews from Tripadvisor.

I remember you used to say the same thing about Toronto not that long ago.

I hope you also remember that I told that London forumer that saying that there is nothing in Toronto for tourists was both unfair and inaccurate.

The difference is nowadays he admits he was a closet French nationalist, after years of denying it. Not the separatist kind, but more like the "let's continuously put down Toronto vs Montreal because it's 'Our city', while throwing the occasional bone Toronto's way about things where it is so far ahead that i can no longer snark about it" variety.

Thats stating the obvious. Throwing an occasional positive bone while continuing to be one of the most anti-Toronto posters on the entire internet is classic narcissistic sociopath behaviour.

Oh you're back in that phase now?

BTW, you guys missed a snarky underhanded comment from me in the "signature dish" thread.

You might want to check it out!

I don't live in a world of theory either. Most of my posts are based on my experience and I assume the same for the rest of the SSP community. My experiences with Australians visiting Toronto is limited to a handful of occasions with people I have met while traveling abroad. The lotsa wires commentary was mentioned twice in two of those 3 or 4 encounters which stood out to me. My impression from these meetings was that they weren't overly enthused by any of Toronto's physical form but, enjoyed the city's culture nevertheless. It's a small sample so there's more chance of coincidence. It is in contrast to the many Americans and Europeans I've hosted or met up with in Toronto. They tended to be amazed by the sheer number of high rises but, less with our city's culture. Reserved, cold, etc. has come up a lot that I've often pondered if that's what makes multiculturalism so successful here.

It seems to me that this is often relative rather than absolute, and depends on both sides.

Here in Vancouver it is not uncommon for people to literally say and believe that this is the Best Place on Earth™. To someone who believes this, virtually anything realistic said about the city can sound negative or even like a deliberate attack.

It's natural that people will have a range of opinions about any given city, and some will like some places more than others.

Yes, I do, and I was pleased to see you post that.

They were almost always positive though and really liked all of the places I/we visited with them in Ontario and Quebec.
This is one of the positives of having milder winter weather in Vancouver and especially Victoria that is often overlooked in the weather debate.

I may get eaten alive here but I definitely notice how much harder winter is on curbs, sidewalks, foliage, etc... elsewhere in Canada compared to the south coast of BC.

This is also why water features seem far more common in Vancouver than other cities in Canada.
