If so, then it probably does make sense to paint the entire Subway orange.

It might be a good idea to add in some decorative (and festive) flashing lights and perhaps an audible siren (foghorn) for any overly tall vehicles that approach the Subway too closely...........

From Mayor Dawn Arnold's update on tonight's council meeting:

Quote:
With the new provincial Local Government Governance Act, we are finally able to do something about booting. There will now be an annual licensing fee for all booters ($100), they will have to provide background checks for their employees, follow proper business standards and the maximum fee they can charge will now be $45.
The reduction of the hostage fee charged by the booters to $45 is huge. Hopefully this will be the first step in removing this pestilence from the downtown core once and for all........

we approved all outstanding items with the Corey Craig group to allow the Hyatt Hotel complex to begin work as of May 15th.
So, work on the new Hyatt Hotel next to the events centre is to begin almost immediately!

aren't there construction trailers and other materials on the Hyatt property? I am glad to see this go forward, I just did not think think they would start this quick.

The construction trailers currently on site are for the events centre next door. Presumably once these are removed, construction of the new hotel can commence.

Moncton proposes new rules for 'booting' cars in parking lots
'I've been quoted as calling it a blight on our city,' Mayor Dawn Arnold says
Kate Letterick · CBC News · Posted: May 07, 2018 11:02 PM AT | Last Updated: an hour ago
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunsw...aw-to-regulate-vehicle-booting-1.4652757

Welcome to Moncton........

Quote:
- Booting fees run as high as $180 in Moncton but if the proposed bylaw passes, Robichaud said maximum booting fees would be capped at $45.
- The official said some clients have been forced to pay cash to free their vehicles or wait an hour for the device to be removed. Operators would be subject to time limits if council approves the bylaw, said Robichaud. "The employee who has been designated to remove the device needs to be at that parking lot either on site or available within 30 minutes of receiving a phone call to come and remove the device."
- Companies would also have to permit people to pay with cash, debit or credit, said the official.
- Companies that apply the boot would have additional rules to follow including a $100 annual licensing fee, record-keeping for all immobilized vehicles and mandatory criminal background checks for employees.
- Robichaud said the city would have the right to cancel or revoke company licences if the rules are not followed.
- Moncton is also looking at improving signage in parking lots.
So I wonder if the booter doesn't come to liberate your vehicle within 30 minutes, does this mean that you don't have to pay him? This would seem justifiable to me just on the basis of sheer inconvenience.

I wonder if the booting companies still have a valid business model under the new rules. I certainly hope not.......

Boots should be replaced with fences, gates and keycard access. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end for the boot-Nazis.

Boots are not pleasant.

The new by-laws if passed will make it a regulated industry and not the wild west as it is right now in terms of fine fees and more.

But I believe boots have a place in regulating unwanted parking, lot/business owners shouldn't have to pay good money to put fencing and gates up to protect what is rightfully theirs if they have proper signage warning of this.

Most of the people know they shouldn't be parking where they do, they just hope they don't get caught, problem is one of a sense of entitlement so there has to be a consequence for that action and in this case it's the boot (all be it a hopefully refined and regulated booting situation).

With the reduction in fees from the outrageous $180 or so to $45 maybe it will become unprofitable for the booting companies. If they CAN make a profit and survive at $45 can you imagine what their profits were before. Was the public ever scammed!

At $180, thats more than a ticket for a simple speeding infraction!

I heard something interesting yesterday from my neighbor while cleaning my yard.

Some land around Harpers Lane could be on the radar for the location of the new RCMP detachment. I told my neighbor that most of that corner land is owned by Valmond Robichaud. According to neighbor, apparently Irving owns some of that pot of gold in that area.

Valmond's hotel project is slated for the vacant lot to the east of Harper Lane.

There is a whole other vacant lot on the west side of Harper Lane too (between Harper Lane and King Street). It is therefore a possibility.

I would still prefer to see the new RCMP HQ on Assumption next to the courthouse, but if this area of east Main were to suddenly see both a new hotel and a police station, that would go a long way to urbanizing the whole length of Main Street to the Moncton/Dieppe city boundary.

AS a kid in the 70's I vaguely remember an Irving gas station by the corner of KING/Main St.. They may still own the land.

I too remember an Irving station there. In more recent years another Irving enterprise was located right next to it, can't think of the name though. A cleaning company perhaps? Starts with the letter C maybe?

This is actually an interesting concept for 1111 Main Street.

The idea of adding a restaurant in front of this building would certainly do a lot for street presence in the area, but this could be a risky venture. Despite being across the street from the events centre, a restaurant here would be about four blocks removed from the heart of the restaurant/bar district on Main Street. Of course, there are several other restaurants in the general area (at the Crowne Plaza and in the V Hotel for example), and there will soon be a new branded restaurant in the soon to be constructed Hyatt. I wonder if somebody will take the plunge and consider developing this proposal.......

Apparently Pizza Girls/Katch Seafood is definitely coming to this location. It will be run corporately until a local franchisee can be found.

Couple of tidbits:

The antique shop at 148 High (corner or St George) is being liquidated and will be refurbished for ground-floor retail and second-floor apartments.

I'm told there are still plans to develop a 3- or 4-storey apartment building with ground-floor retail at the old Lyle's gas station, but the developer is apparently running into "plumbing issues", which presumably means inadequate sewer capacity.

It seems to be what happends with redevelopment of downtown properties. I do hope they will be able to fix whatever issues they might have quickly, and get on with the development sooner rather then later.
