As far as I’m concerned they can put both Nancy Pelosi and Oren Hatch at the bottom of almost any junk heap and the world would be a better place. I really don’t think that our junkyard deserves to be named after either one of them though. In fact, I think it would be great if they would put all of the Democrat and Republican politicians under the same junk heap. Any person who would support either one of those political organizations is just a drone of the shepherd man.

I think the Vivint renovation has actually had a negative impact on the place. I go to a lot of jazz games and while the seats are definitely nicer the overall experience has declined. Food prices went up this year while the quality of food went down. They used to give away shirts, hats, or other random things when you came in the building to attend a Jazz game... they didn’t do that this year. Last year they had a lot of good halftime shows this year they have been very infrequent. In the past they have always put up vinyl billboards on the side of the building to promote the jazz... this year they didn’t, not even for the playoffs. They put a horrible glass extension around the first row of the upper bowl which obstruct your view... and from what I understand from my grandparents the price of next years season passes have more than doubled.

For the past while they haven’t even been turning the Vivint sign on at night... not even during the games. I guess they can’t afford to keep the power on. Maybe that renovation wasn’t the greatest idea. :/

I'm just pissed because they took out so many trees and put no vegetation around the remaining public areas. It's a shame they couldn't transplant any of the ones around the edges. The barren, concrete wasteland perfectly compliments the emotionless cube... Minus the triad, that entire intersection is unbelievably hot and barren, with the Mega Parking Lot 3000, the giant concrete slab, and all the stuff on the southeast corner that has more ugly barren masonry and cement. PLANT A DAMN TREE.

Food courts at the shopping mall are so 1980s. Today, it’s food halls that are trendy.

The Ferry Building Marketplace in San Francisco and Chelsea Market in New York are two of the most famous food halls, but there are dozens of similar venues — which offer an eclectic lineup of eateries in a casual, open setting — popping up all over the country.

Salt Lake City will get one later this year at The Gateway, officials announced Thursday...In addition to food, the hall will have a beer and wine bar.

The Gateway closed its food court more than a year ago to make way for Utah’s first Dave & Buster’s, which will open later this month..."SkinnyFats" has a number of locations in Las Vegas, but The Gateway location will be its first outside of Nevada, company founder Reed Slobusky said in a news release.

“We’ve seen the SkinnyFats concept go over in such a big way in Las Vegas,” he said. “Now, we’re taking it to the next level by creating this cool, downtown food hall in Salt Lake City.”

When it opens this month in the Left Bank development off West Seventh Street, MidiCi The Neapolitan Pizza Company will elevate the fast-casual pizza chain.

For starters, to be called authentic Neapolitan pizza, ingredient requirements are strict: finely ground “00” flour, Italian tomatoes, cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil, fresh mozzarella and aged Parmigiano-Reggiano are among the essentials, along with an oven that can reach upwards of 1,000 degrees to fire the pies in about 60 to 90 seconds.

Quality of food has gone down? Are you high? They put a lot of effort into finding the best local restaurants to partner with. In my opinion the quality of the food has gone way up, and the interior is beautiful.

I don't know about the other things, but criticizing the food is so far off the mark.

There are valid criticisms about removing vegetation on the outside, though.

I've been a Utah Jazz (#takenote) season ticket holder for 13 years now, and I've found it to be the opposite of almost everything you just stated. We now have a world-class basketball venue with these renovations.

To start, the food offerings are light years ahead of what was offered even just last season, and prices are comparable w/ last couple of years. Also, It has never been the norm to get a free hat or shirt upon your entrance into the arena, and I've been to hundreds of home games in the past decade - they do give free shirts to attendees during playoffs though, as well as shirts from different sponsors on some nights. The new plaza, especially during these playoffs, has a party atmosphere and there's a lot to do: photos w/ the Jazz dancers, free pizza and ice cream, radio stations giving away free shirts and things, fun things for the kids etc. I'm glad they aren't covering the arena with vinyl this year. The new video board highlights the Jazz team as well as other events happening at the arena.

Construction Begins Monday On First Of Three New Homeless Shelters

Officials will break ground Monday on the first of three new homeless shelters in Salt Lake County.

The shelter at 700 south in Salt Lake City will open next summer. The Geraldine E. King Homeless Resource Center is one of three new planned homeless shelters in Salt Lake County. It will house 200 homeless women over night and provide employment and housing assistance. A mobile health clinic will also serve clients.

Another shelter on High Avenue in Salt Lake City is inching toward construction. It will have 200 beds and house both men and women.

The third shelter in South Salt Lake is behind schedule. It will serve up to 300 men.

I'm not sure this has been posted yet. A 6-story, 59-unit development planned in Sugar House at 1034 East Elm Street, just south of Liberty Village and just west of the UC Sugarmont apartments:









The crazy thing is as small as this development is, it's 50,000 total square feet, which is two and a half times the size of the 20,000 sq ft that triggers a design review in Sugar House. This wouldn't even be close to having a design review anywhere downtown. Says a lot about the difference in design requirements in downtown vs Sugar House. There is no square footage threshold for a design review anywhere downtown. Perhaps there should be?

Always great to see a parking lot developed. I like this design for Sugarhouse. While I haven't had a problem with some of the more trendy designs like Sugarmont being built in Sugarhouse lately, I do appreciate this scale and curtain pattern as a more vintage appropriate fit for the neighborhood.

Agree Always Sunny, The PaperBox along with several of the other planned projects can't happen soon enough for this West Downtown sector. That area has been a wasteland of parking lots for far too long. So glad to see each year bringing a decent list of new developments.

The area surrounding the intersection of 200 South and 300 West is continuing its evolution from a dead zone to a bridge between the downtown core and the Gateway District. Development partners, Clearwater Homes and Peg Development, are ready to expand their presence in the area with the PaperBox Lofts, a proposed mixed-use development for the 100 South block of 300 West.

The developers have submitted revised design plans to the city in preparation for a public hearing with the Salt Lake City Planning Commission for a Planned Development request.
The project will include three mixed-use buildings and a parking structure and will occupy the middle of the block with frontage on both 300 West and 400 West. The three mixed-use buildings will also front a pedestrian walkway, several plazas and a small through-street.

The buildings will have combined 183 residential units. The two largest buildings will occupy the south side of the development and will both be six-stories tall with 95 and 84 units respectively. The units will be a mix of studio, one and two-bedroom apartments. Both buildings will sit above a shared parking structure. The parking structure will include 214 parking stalls, 63 of which utilize the City Lift automated parking appliance.

A landscaped plaza will separate the two larger buildings and each building will also front street-facing plaza at the east and west ends of the property. The two buildings will have live/work walk-up units on the ground floor, but the building fronting 300 West will have one street-facing ground floor retail pad

A smaller building will be just north of the larger two buildings and will be three stories with four, two-bedroom units...

Beer and wine bar?!! In Utah? In a food court? (Looking for socks.) I imagine it will will be hidden somehow so nobody will know it's there. In the Eccles theater they had to build a cover for the alcoholic beverage serving area so it can't be seen from above. Utah, A Pretty Scary Place. Before somebody says, "Love it or leave it", I'm a native and have two houses here. I'm not leaving.

I'm not sure I've seen a post about this and not sure how I missed it, but the "final" plan for the Life on State project was released last month. There was a workshop for it on April 30. Haven't read through it extensively but I guess the final street improvements to be implemented haven't been decided yet. There are suggested improvements to street/sidewalk at certain catalytic sites (700 S to 900 S, 1300 S, 2100 S), but they are described as initial low-cost implementations, done for a catalytic effect before implementing final, large scale improvements.
