Having been to Australia (twice), I think that Sydney is beautiful for the reason that Vancouver is beautiful: the natural setting is gorgeous. I find Sydney's office towers nondescript. Sydney tower is actually quite ugly. What makes the city beautiful is the harbor, the Harbor Bridge, and the Opera House.

Montreal's skyscrapers are actually much more iconic than anything in Sydney. Melbourne has a few iconic skyscrapers, but nothing that impressive. What I loved about Melbourne is the street-level density/vibe, and the wonderful mixture of old and new (much like Montreal).

I'd go so far as to state that if you took Montreal and put it in the prairies, and did the same thing for Sydney, the former would come out on top in terms of skyline attractiveness (admittedly a very subjective concept). on the bald prairie, Toronto would slay both of them handily.

Speaking of Sydney-esque, minus a bridge of course...

I guess we all have our own definition of attractiveness, but imo Sydney's skyline is much more impressive than Montreal's. It looks better than Toronto's too. But yes, if you pay attention to the architecture of the buildings, you can make a point that Montreal has overall better architecture and design.

I can generally agree with this.

I guess it depends on whether we consider the opera house and the bridge as part of the skyline.

Another thing though is that Sydney CBD is more tightly clustered than Montreal's which tends to be a bit gappy (though this is changing as it fills in).

Skyscraper/skyline geeks tend to value clustering a lot, so it seems...

Really? Only if you include the bridge, opera house and harbour as the central focus of the "skyline".

If you focus more on the buildings themselves and the clustering effect, Toronto is a borderline top 10 skyline - in the world IMO.

I don't think we can say that about Sydney, at least not if we're focusing mostly on skyscraping buildings.

And if natural setting weighs that heavily, then people should check out Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky...

Ive always found Sydney's skyline more visually appealing than Toronto or Montreal, maybe because it has more signature and diverse architecture or better office towers. Melbourne has an exploding skyline that now surpasses dare i even say both the big two Canadian. Melbourne's urban fabric reminded me very much of Montreal. Great transportation easy walkability and beautiful architecture.

I am not even taking the bridge, the opera house or the harbour into account, imo Sydney's skyline is just very impressive by itself.

Some views of the Toronto's skyline are very impressive, such as from the Toronto islands. Definitely top 25 worldwide. Add in a few 300 to 400 m signature towers well positioned around the CBD and that would become top 10 instantly. I wished they stopped building them in Yorkville and focused on the waterfront instead.

Take away the bridge, the harbour and the opera house, and Sydney's skyline for me is a Calgary+ at best!

In terms of iconic standout quality and sheer, big city impressiveness, Toronto's big bank towers seem to be a notch above the office towers in Sydney, IMO.

I've been on this site for 13 years and in the development industry for 10, I'm well aware of the developments both underway and expected in Edmonton.

You think they are more diverse in design than those in Toronto or Vancouver, then post an image of several blue glass towers that look remarkably similar and all together unremarkable. I'm not sure how that proves your point at all.

Maybe you should take a look at some of the towers planned for Toronto, or even more so Vancouver. The level of design from both the local and international firms in those two cities is on a level we haven't seen in Canada for a long time.

Certainly a lot of parallels and that ain't a bad thing in my opinion. Big Winnipeg fan here.

Similar angles, of course once the ice district is complete those parallels will diminish even further.
