Red dot at the bottom is where Reagh shot the image, above the Broadway Tunnel. Red dot at the top is the Olive St Shul, 227 North Olive. Blue dot is the La Salle Apartments, 314 California, between Broadway and Hill, home of the guy with the DeSoto.

Orange dot is the inersection of Broadway and Fort Moore Place, where the grandest houses were. The yellow dot to the right is Mary Banning's place (that began life as the Buena Vista, Jacob Phillipi's beer hall, in 1883.) The other yellow dot to the left is the Hill St tunnel opening onto Temple.

Beaudry, do you have an aerial photo from this time frame that shows N. Grand between Temple and Sunset? Thanks in advance.

I believe the photo was taken to show the damage on the side of the vehicle.

Beaudry's aerial seems to be frame 60 of flight C_7334, which is dated as August 15, 1941. Here's part of frame 94 showing N Grand between Temple and Sunset.

That's the ever-lush and cooling Ficus nitida, e_r. This 2011 specimen seems to have been behaving itself very considerately, as I see only a slight amount of the pavement-buckling the roots can cause. Storeowners can find them objectionable because the lushness of the growth hides a store's signage. The new tree is a Jacaranda, a beautiful and desirable tree . . . which causes its own amount of problems, for instance when the beautiful blossoms fall en masse and make the sidewalks slippery. But always: Better any tree than no tree!

The building in the background is Pride Hand Laundry Ltd at 5873 W 3rd Street. I think the raised sign just says "SAVE 20%". We've seen the building before:

The damaged LAFD vehicle was probably parked outside Engine Co No 61 at 5821 W 3rd Street. We've been here before too. This is part of a post about the filming locations of The Three Stooges' 1936 short "False Alarms".

I didn't know the girls were members of a specific 'troupe'. I thought they were probably studio contract players.....or women from a casting agency.

& since there are nine women on the roof-top and nine in the photograph below... I think these lovely ladies might be the "RKO Pictures Chorus Girls".

(& just so you all know...I'm also curious about that odd 'flue'-like thingy that looks like a giant matchstick)

I tried to find a an aerial of Paramount which shows the "flue like" thingy since that would be the wood or carpenter's shop and would zero in on the location. I settled for some maps of the lot. The flue would be a chimney for burning sawdust and scraps from the wood shop. Most studios had them at the time. There is a spark arrestor on the top to keep the cheap sets (all made of wood) from catching fire and going up like matchsticks.

It appears that the most likely candidate for the building where the women are on the roof would be the Hans Dreier building on the Paramount lot. It was built in 1929 and appears to have a flat roof. It is adjacent (or attached to Stage 9 and kitty-corner across from the carpentry shop which would have had the flue.
The photo is probably flipped since the carpenters shop would actually be to the right of roof of the Dreier building rather than the other side.

Someone who has worked on the Paramount lot, correct me if I'm wrong, and let me know if the Dreier building actually has a flat roof.

I hope it was winter when the picture was taken since it would have been really hot on that roof in summer in the middle of the day!!

Pride Laundry are still on the scene but have moved a few buildings east to stand on the corner at 5851 W. Third St. to be still next door to the fire station. Must be really fussy about maintaining minimal response times in case of fire.

Could this be the mystery "'flue'-like thingy"? It's quite near the backlot. The photo below is from 1930. The arrowed object is absent from mid-40s images that I've found. The area today would be just east of the Blue Sky Tank.

FWIW, 1947 permit for the brick structure Pride currently occupies (5851) indicates it was intended for use as retail stores and "No food or beverages to be sold in stores." Apparently prior to '47 it was unimproved. (Another view below.)


We have discussed Station 61, Stooges and nearby locations several times. We've also seen another west view of Station 61 from what was once the ABC Market at 5800 W Third Street (Currently the Wine Hotel). New construction permit suggests that structure dates from 1932. Returning to the image in front of the Station, looking to the (left) south side of the street is a big dark structure, that would have clearly predated Park La Brea. CD search has not yet revealed anything about that structure. Haven't tried aerial views, yet.
