In reading the above news item, I couldn’t help but think this is an opportunity to fix a previous mistake and not repeat it for another 20 years.
New name could be in the works for Edmonton's Shaw Conference Centre

I love this particular photo because if our Convention Centre needs to have Shaw's name on it - or anybody else's name on it - and the signage on it needs to be brought to you by Coca Cola just like every coffee shop in the country that can’t afford its own signage, then Edmonton really is "unfinished business", just like the sign says.
Nothing says "NOT world class" like selling the naming rights to our convention centre. If it was worth $5.5 million for 20 years to Shaw, it should have been worth a darn sight more than that to the City of Edmonton not to cheapen it/tarnish its image for those 20 years.
I don't know any other major convention facility anywhere that doesn't fly the flag of its home city or state in the name of its facility except Chicago's McCormick place which was permanently named to honour the man responsible for getting it built, not named for the highest bidder from time to time.
Edmonton paid for our convention centre, Edmonton operates it, Edmonton is investing in attracting the business and events to it locally, provincially, nationally and internationally through its efforts, not through the efforts of its naming sponsors whose job ended when we put their signs up. As such, it should be branded the Edmonton Convention Centre. Anything else will just continue to say “small town cheap” to the world for the next 20 years.
