yeah, I've been pretty underwhelmed by the lighting on the mooring mast as well.

Right, they hyped it up to be a big deal with it changing colors for certain occasions.

I still think it is significant that they re-established a red marquee on the top of the building. (BTW, I have not been downtown at night to verify this)

The lighting on the dirigible mast has be utterly lack-luster. In the beginning it was certainly a welcome site, but that tower deserve more prominence at night. If mcalumni01 is right about the building now having two signs displaying "TJ Tower" I think it is grand! That part of downtown needs some serious illumination.

Oh it's lit up'ed. Saw it the past weekend. one on the second Ave. N side of the building and the other on the front side facing the police headquarters.

Thanks mcalum!!! I'm glad you gave us an up close and personal view of the mast's lighting. Any chance you could get us a view of the "TJ Tower" lights sometime soon? I'm a recovering alcoholic, so keeping to my home after work is better than waiting at a bar for the sun to set...

That's a good picture, and I agree that's probably not the font I'd gone with, but it is much better than before. They need to get Scruffy up there to fix that T.

New Census estimates are out.
The MSA added 2,919 to get to 1,149,807.
The CSA added 3,083 to get to 1,364,062.

Well, the DNC has requests that Birmingham bid for the 2020 convention.

Mayor Woodfin has expressed interest, and seems intent on bidding for it.

The BJCC construction is practically a sure thing now, but I’m concerned about the BJCC’s available space. I’m not concerned about Legacy Arena, because I think that its overhaul can be fast-tracked, no am concerned about available hotels. If the DNC selected Birmingham this year, I am certain that developers would (forgive my language) jizz over the buildings available downtown that could be developed for hospitality.

I’m most concerned about the amount of available event space.

I think Birmingham has passed the negative phase. Definitely a city on the upswing you have the right Mayor for this time. Only petty politics and old school, ignorant stereotypes will keep you down. Tremendous opportunity for people with vision and no negativity. For those who think different get out of the way because you are going
to be left behind.

Well said, thank you. Birmingham has had more than its fair share of critics and haters inside and outside the city time for them to move on to something or somewhere else. On a side note. I love the new street lights here on 20th Street South.

So am I, but you would think Perez would have to know that before asking the city to put in its bid. I mean, why do it? We know there's more hotel rooms downtown, but still not enough - rooms would be filled from Cullman to Clanton and Tuscaloosa to Anniston, but to me that is less of a problem than the convention space room. Maybe they would be willing to relax those requirements.

I'm not terribly concerned about the number of hotel rooms, either. As long as the city has a solid traffic control plan, it would be easy to get folks from hotels down 280 to the BJCC within half an hour. This would also be the perfect opportunity for a Hyatt, Omni, or Hilton to buy the AT&T building and convert it to a hotel.

I too think Perez is aware that our amount of available convention space is low, but I would think he'd expect the city solve that issue in some way between now and 2020. Frankly, the city is better off going ahead and increasing the amount of square footage before 2020 anyway for the purpose of attracting larger conventions in the future.
