The new Halifax library is tremendous as is the new addition to the NAC. Either team would be great, IMO.

Like the one proposed by DCDLS (below)? That was one of the few, if not only part of their proposal that I preferred over RVL. I think the architect for that one was Moriyama+Teshima, who are unfortunately not on the list.

RVL's library proposal had a better site (though not within the competition lands), but I thought it looked too much like a branch library, and not like a central branch. I don't have a logical argument for this. Just my humble opinion. Architect for that one was Schmidt/Hammer/Lassen.

Am I the only one who is not a huge fan of the Halifax library? It's just such an average looking building. Glass boxes. Wow. We have plenty of that in this city already. Now Calgary or Vancouver... those are truly impressive buildings!

I tend to think a library should be a glass box. It makes it easier to navigate and easier to re-purpose once we don't need a library that stores books anymore.

The Vancouver main library is still my favourite. And if I understand right it's also the product of a federal-municipal partnership (federal office tower is co-located).

It's a huge shame that, unlike Vancouver in the 90s, the people of Ottawa won't be able to pick the design they like most...

My biggest hope is that we get a new public building whose design doesn't look like an afterthought, is a landmark and doesn't look like it was done on the cheap.

Yaaaa... That's not great. Silver lining is that it's certainly an improvement. Ottawa considered renovating the current main branch. Here was the result;

I'm also puzzled as to why the Halifax Library is always used as the example to follow (especially in Ottawa). It's a fine building for a smaller city like Halifax, but Ottawa should be more ambitious, specially considering the location.

I hate starchitecture libraries.

Start with the function. Build a nice, even beautiful form, to contain that function. But enough with the wannabe Gehrys.

The new library should be open and airy with nice views to the outside and should be visually attractive from the street.

In other words, there will be lots of glass, and it should not be a box.

It should be the opposite to the current 'bunker'.

Especially since it quite remote from traditional downtown, there should be cafes and patios (privately operated) built in. You should not have to walk blocks for a bite to eat or to get something to drink.

The Halifax library is more impressive in person, but I agree that it's way over-hyped. I hope they don't go for all-glass either, we want something that will look distinctive amongst all the condos that will surround it.

The Halifax library cost much less than what Ottawa is planning to spend. One hopes the final product will reflect that.

I think the library needs to be a showstopper. Something that will be an architectural marvel, especially considering the dual function and that this is a G7 capital. We can look to places like Halifax, which is a library I really like, to see what worked for them, but it's not a very bold design.

Looking at Vancouver's library, now that is a unique design that stands out in a good way. However, and this is my personal opinion that many would disagree with, I find Calgary's new library to be kind of awkward and tacky looking. I appreciate the bold design, but its just not something that would be fitting for Ottawa needs.
