This site generally doesn't consider a building to be under construction until the structure is rising above street level.

They've had the new mechanical exhaust location installed above street level since last year.

What exactly was being poured on the last page? Something underground?

My guess is they were pouring the concrete for the reinforcement of the foundations they've been working on.

There are now little sections of the food court in Wpg Square enclosed in temporary drywall. I assume more prep work going on for the new tower? Things are moving at a snails pace on this project (compared to how quickly True North got up and going), but at least they are moving! I wonder when the brown caps covering the original piles on the roof of the food court are going to get removed and work started on what ever needs to be done with those piles.

Umm there has been a ton of work going on for it already. Most of it out of sight though.

I think it was just easier to see at TNS because it was just one big hole. It took almost a year I feel before the hole got to ground level. 300 will get there... I'm impatient also. I just want to see a crane on site already. I hope they have a camera to show progress just like TNS.

This has been "above grade" since work started something like a year ago now.

Among the changes that are visible:

- the southeast corner of the food court was configured
- Chamberlains was gutted and turned into something site related
- the retail stalls opposite Shoppers said to be the elevator shafts are being cleared of tenants
- to the Fort side of the food court major new duct word was installed
- the mall entrance closer to Portage has had all tenants removed including several relocations within the mall.
- there is a visual facelift of the mall itself underway.

And I am sure I has missed a whole bunch. This has definitely moved well past being "proposed".

As for some of the work being "slow" I think the landlord has a long standing arrangement that work on the mall level doesn't happen during hours it is open. That would seem to explain why other changes seemingly take forever, ie Pizza Hotline being almost a full year behind their originally posted opening date.

I think that's what we're all waiting for.

The new work in the food court is to strengthen the elevator shafts with new columns on the corners and thicker concrete walls.

Also, if you look through the opening in the temporary wall set up in the entrance of Shoppers, you can see a bunch of holes drilled into the column that's in there. I assume that will be done as well to all the visible and non-visible columns in that whole end of the mall.

I'm not sure I understand the need to strengthen the columns before the tower goes up. Had they proceeded with the second office tower when the first one was going up, does it mean that the columns that were originally poured would have been too weak to actually support it? I had thought that although the tops of the columns were capped due to the second tower not going up as originally planned, the columns would be ready should a structure go up in the future.

As I understand it they are building a tower approximately ten stories taller than it was originally designed for. Also steel frame construction if that makes any difference.

Building codes have changed, as has the plan for the new tower

I think the fact it is to be steel construction is what caused a little confusion for me. Although the new tower is to be about 10 stories taller than the building originally planned for the site, I thought the steel would be lighter weight than concrete and that the original columns could handle the load. I guess that isn't the case after all.

I'm kind of glad the original tower did not go up as I think this new one will look so much better.

You think so? I like the height of this and one and clearly it will be a modern addition to the skyline, but that said I think there is something to be said for the sizable floorplate of the original proposal. 300 Main will only cover a small portion of the overall site... by contrast, the original design would have covered almost the entire south end of the block.
