It's nowhere near as bad as Fuqua. At least it would be well-funded and probably quite dense, although the story itself is dubious. It also could be a huge tourism attraction; Disney doesn't mess around.

It would be way more appropriate at 17th and Northside imo, which is in fact a Fuqua disaster. But if the idea is to connect it with the Beltline and have it be a major shopping and entertainment center it would instantly vault the Beltline into sort of an insane caliber of leisure trail; among the most successful in the world. Ponce City Market, Piedmont Park, Krog Street Market, and Disney all within a few miles of each other. Better expand the trail at once imo.

Lots of enthusiasm, it seems, for a Disney theme park that would certainly deliver a fatal death blow to what's left of the character of the surrounding neighborhoods.

Since when did jobs, tourism and development become a bad thing? Keep in mind if this were to happen, it would almost certainly be limited to the land that is now ugly ass railroad infrastructure. How could anyone see this as a negative is beyond me.....

It's Disney. Do you expect them to do anything that isn't cheesy or respectful of the surrounding neighborhoods? Not all development is desirable.

Perhaps they would. They've turned an area that was a malarial swamp 100 years ago into a global tourism destination that beats everything Atlanta has to offer combined several times over--they deserve the benefit of the doubt. You know, maybe to actually see what they're proposing before trashing it just because of their name.

Also, if you're trying to build a plastic, hokey junior amusement park then Hulsey is like a really impractical expensive place to put it. Do you really think their grand plan is to have suburbanites navigate their Chevy Tahoes full of kids up and down Carroll Street?

Just relax and wait and see what it actually is, whether Disney or something else. It's not like you can do anything about it until it's announced anyways.

Is there a precedent from Disney for a development that isn't a hokey amusement park in some suburban or swamp locale? Their entire business model is built on suburbanites in Tahoes. If there is something they've built that can serve as a model for appropriate scale and sensitivity to historic urban neighborhoods, I'll eat my words. But no, I'm not giving Disney, of all companies, the benefit of the doubt. This is like hearing that Fuqua has announced another project. You don't have to see it beforehand to know it's probably going to be shit. I'd like to be pleasantly surprised, though.

That looks cheesy. Like a very cheap version of Glenwood Park, which is the project any large-scale redevelopment intown should aspire to. Do you think something like Celebration would blend in well with Cabbagetown? It would contrast sharply, and not in any appealing way.

Gotta admit that the Hulsey Yard real estate would be worth quite a bit of money. From what my "source" says, Disney is looking to build an entertainment complex aimed at adults that blends in with the neighborhood. I can't find a thing about it in the news which makes me a little suspicious, but Disney does usually place some pretty ironclad non disclosures on any negotiations they enter into.

ANYWAY - the Disney story may not be real, but I do know of a very large West Coast Media company that is looking at Atlanta for a massive development. This project would cement Atlanta as the media capital of the US/World. Details should be coming soon.

They only have 5,400 employees though. So it'll be interesting to see what they have in store (unless it's an HQ relocation?).

EDIT: It'll be nice if they choose the Southside too, to be near the center of the film industry
