You need to get a card from the receptionist. Just let them know you want to go to the rooftop.

Well, ok, then. That makes feel better. Whenever I've got some time and a nice day to do it, I've been meaning to go do another hotel tour for the views.

I love views from the roof tops, because they don't just have the views, they are also fun.

Thanks!

Hotel pools just aren't what they used to be. Who can actually swim in that. Get me a drink.

I was showing someone around Austin from out of town back in November, and we tried going up for some photos, but we couldn't get the elevator to let us. I was disappointed, because the last time I had been up there I had no problem, and the people on the pool deck were nice about it.

Me an Nixcity tried to go up there during SXSW and noticed that we couldn't get up there. I guess it is for hotel guests though I had thought it was originally supposed to be open to the public. Could be wrong about that but either way too bad cause it does have some good views.

Here's an oldie - found this bank bag whilst rooting around in a box from the attic. My Dad was personnel director (HR) there in 1959 - his first job after retiring from the US Army.
I think Perry's Restaurant is located the now, next to the classic Norwood Tower. Supposedly they have a good pork chop on their lunch menu. Maybe we'll venture down there sometime to try it out - if I can find a parking place nearby.

Oh, man. That's nice. That's kind of like the old school aerial postcards I'd drool over picking up. Seeing aerials like this one really drives home just how much the skyline has grown. It's nuts.

Do you have a source link for that photo? I'd like to share it with the original webpage attached.

That's an awesome pic. Aside from the Proper, that 3 building cluster may be my least favorite trio. Its quite disappointing from that angle. Just a clump of boxes with little variation. Such a waste of potential for that area. Even though the density is unique, it still makes me sad.

I'm actually liking that buildings aren't going very tall in the warehouse district. It gives me some hope that we'll still be able to see the Frost Bank Tower years from now from at least a few angles, if only in aerials like this.

This one is similar to that one and shows Spring and The Bowie better.

Now that the American-Statesman has changed hands, I guess now they're charging to park in their parking lot. Anyway, their page mentioning that on their website had an aerial photo showing downtown back when the Frost Bank Tower was under construction.

https://www.statesman.com/parking/

Look at the west side of downtown. You can see City Hall under construction. The crane in the background on the left side is for Austin City Lofts. This view doesn't show it, but the Hilton was also under construction when this photo was taken.

And, a more recent aerial.

Before and after.

1955

In this photo, you can see the old Austin City Hall at the head of the South First Street Bridge, but at that time that building housed a lumber company. That whole area is Austin's warehouse district. Back then it was legit light industrial, but today it's mostly bars and restaurants, surrounded by office towers and residential buildings. Austin City Hall at that time was a few blocks north of there. The Capitol building was still the tallest building in Austin at the time this was taken, and it would remain Austin's tallest until 1974. Today there are 34 buildings that are taller than the Capitol that either complete or under construction, and there are at least 20 more planned that will be taller than the Capitol. The UT Tower was also the only high rise north of the Capitol back then.

This photo from 1997 shows the Palmer Auditorium before it was transformed into the Long Center. That's the South First Street Bridge. The small yellow building at the head of the bridge is Austin City Hall. To the left you can see the Tom Green Water Treatment Plant. That whole area now is covered with towers. The old city hall was demolished and replaced with a new one in 2004. The Green Water Treatment Plant was demolished and more than 2 1/2 million square feet of office space, hotel and residential replaced it.

2017 - You can see the new City Hall surrounded by development, as well as the Green Water Treatment Plant site being redeveloped with towers.

The view from the UT Tower in 1969. The Capitol was still the tallest building in Austin, but only for another 5 years. This photo also shows the construction of what would become only Austin's third 300 footer. The Dobie Center, a private dorm, was under construction here, seen on the right. You can also see the first of the big state office buildings going up in the Capitol Complex.

The view from the Tower reminded me of this:

Kappa Sig Fraternity house on 19th St. (MLK) on March 2nd, 1963. This photo in my 1962 UT Cactus shows the frat guys' response to the Army ROTC artillery cannonade on the South Mall saluting Texas Independence Day.

It appears that some adult beverages may have played a role in the fraternity's hijinks.

(the frat house was located adjacent to the east side of the Cambridge Tower and faced north directly up University Avenue towards the Tower. It was a parking lot the last time I drove by there)
