Moncton-Montreal are far enough apart to warrant a 2-3-2. I think the minimum is seven hours on the road apart.

Either way, i'd be surprised if the series went 5.

I believe its a total distance thing, over 700 KM and its 2-3-2. In the Semis & Finals this doesn't apply. Most teams at this point are flying anyways. The Wildcats took a chartered flight to Rimouski for game 7 to avoid having the team sit idle on a bus for 7-10 hours.

Apparently we'll know later today if the 2019 Memorial Cup will be in Halifax or Moncton.

I'm hoping for Moncton of course, but have a suspicion that Halifax will win......

Maybe they wanted to see how Moncton will handle operations in the new Centre before awarding them the Cup. Unless Gatineau gets in the mix for the next, Moncton is pretty much a lock for the next time.

Halifax deserved this, their team is a year further along developmentally and overall could ice a better a team then us to host a Memorial Cup (plus their rink seats more). We also have hosted the Memorial Cup since they last did so they were due.

We're not a slam dunk for the next one either, Saint John could be in the mix and they have yet to host it so technically they're due before us.

It could be awhile before we host again.

Indeed. Gatineau is getting a new arena and Quebec City may want in on the action as well.

My opinion is that it will go to a Quebec based team in 2022 but will swing back to the Maritimes in 2025. Moncton will be competing against SJ to host then. If we don't get it in 2025, we may have to wait until 2031 before we host again.

My guess:

2019 - Halifax
2022 - Quebec City
2025 - Saint John
2028 - Gatineau
2031 - Moncton

Halifax getting the Memorial Cup is the best thing that could happen to the Moncton franchise.

Had they gotten it they would have traded everything and anything of value to make sure they have the best possible roster. The years and years of rebuilding at the new centre would not have been worth it. They will be better off planning for multiple competitive years to keep fan interest high.

If they plan correctly (and I am not sure they can with the current regime) they can aim to have a top 5-10 team next season with a chance to make the finals, and then ultimately have a a championship contender in the 2019-2020 season.

I tend to agree. Irving would have sold the farm, all the animals and the house furnishings to have a top tier team for next year. This would have destroyed the team for the next 5-6 years. I agree that with the Mem Cup out of the way, they can develop a coherent rebuilding program for the team.

The Wildcats are better off not hosting the Memorial Cup for now. 2025 is not that far off (I'd rather not have to wait until 2031 - I'd be 73 years old)

Hah, I got you beat. If it's in 2031 I'll be in my 80's. But that date makes perfect sense as Saint John will probably get it before Moncton does. A new centre isn't going to make a difference and it will be 7 years old in 2025.

It'll look a lot nicer when the ancillary developments (outdoor plaza, Fowler Oval, Hyatt Place Hotel, Junction Urban Village, federal building refurbishment) are also done, and they repave that section of Main Street.

Elton John is adding a bunch of dates for his farewell tour, but there's still seems to be a spot for opening the Centre.

There's a 4 day gap between his show in Quebec City (09/29) and Montreal (10/04).
At first I thought it was maybe for a potential 2nd date for either cities (both shows sold out in seconds), but it's been a few months now and nothing. So it got me thinking that maybe, there's a potential other show but not ready to be announce yet....

Would be a good way to open the Centre with the man who officially had the biggest crowd at the old Colieum.

Mom's been a huge Elton John fan for years (and I admit I don't mind his music either). When he came to Moncton for that Coliseum show we managed to get a pair of tickets that were surprisingly cheap for where they were. (Not on the floor but ring side, and they ended up being almost on the stage it felt).

If the Event Centre does pull off getting his farewell show, I'll certainly be trying to get tix again.

Well, Freddy has just "earned" a second round Q League playoff game between Moncton and Blainville. Moncton won tonight by a score of 5-4. You'd better get your ticket soon Taeolas.

Seriously, this was a great game to watch. Lots of tension and lots of action. It was good to see the Cats win the final hockey game played at the Coliseum. It was a good sendoff for the old lady........
