From some digging in the Census records, the woman on the right of the photo on the front porch may be Lillian Oliver, born Lillian Archer in Ireland in about 1899-1900. She came to the US in 1906 and first lived in Chicago with her parents.

She was married to Francis Oliver, born in Illinois in 1894 of Irish parents. The 1940 census shows that he was a printer of bank notes.

The boy in the pictures may be her son, Thomas Hugh Oliver, born in 1917 in Los Angeles. He would be about ten in the pictures, which seems right. Thomas Oliver served in the US Army in WWII and Korea. He retired a Lt. Colonel. He died in 1997 in Virginia and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

In her later years, Lillian lived in Northern Virginia, either with or near her son. She died in Petersburg, VA at the age of 92.

The other woman in the porch picture may be Mary Jane "Minnie" Irven Archer, her mother. She was born in Northern Ireland in 1873. She and her husband lived a few blocks away in Los Angeles on E. 47th Street in 1930.

The couple owned the house at 6718 2nd Avenue.

We have seen quite alot of these 'Nite-Life' souvenir photographs on nla. I'm pretty sure this one is new to the thread. (I spotted it not too long ago on ebay)

As on an earlier post, it mystifies me how sailors kept those caps on so far back on their heads. Were sailor caps immune from gravity? Did they use bobby pins like on those itty-bitty yarmulkes you see?

'mystery' location.

Michael Leddy at Orange Crate Art blog has chosen this drugstore as the "Best Drugstore in Movies".

But he doesn't know the exact location. (he thinks Culver City is a possibility)

He picked this particular drugstore because the story evolves around the store. (see below)

I could be wrong, but I believe the drugstore interiors were filmed on a set. The inside looks too pristine to me. (although the front door matches with the exterior shot)

Incidentally, that's just a standard plate number format for the time. After 'ABC 123', they switched to the '123 ABC' format in 1969.

I looked to see where Bellwood Ave. is located in Century City and saw that it was close to 20th Century Fox Studios. I then looked up the film on imdb to see if it was a Fox film, but it isn't, it's an MGM film. It does say that MGM borrowed Richard Basehart for the film from Fox. Audrey Totter had been told she'd get star billing, but when MGM borrowed Basehart from Fox, one of the demands of Fox was they'd do it if Basehart got star billing.

The trivia section for the film Tension has this item:

"Tension" was shooting at about the same time in 1949 as Side Street (1950), and the latter film utilizes the pharmacy set and its phone booth to allow Farley Granger to make a phone call.

And not related to any of the above, but interesting:
Portions of André Previn's music score from Tension were recycled as the title theme for same studio's Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958).

I was feeling pleased with myself for tracking down the location of the drugstore in "Tension" to the southwest corner of W 6th Street and S Alexandria Avenue (3500 W 6th Street), right up until I went looking for pictures, and found that GW had already solved the mystery in 2012! - see post #7784. Here's a screengrab showing the Standard Station mentioned by GW. The "S Alexandria Ave" sign is half in shadow just above the "Bus Stop" sign on the left.

Looking the other way, the El Parador Apartments signs are props, but Jasper Tailor Shop at 3510 W 6th Street was real.

This looks like an actual Culver City location. Warren Quimby (Richard Basehart) tries to relax here when his wife walks out.

Quimby, as Paul Sothern, rents an apartment at the rear of 10350 Bellwood Avenue. Here's Mary Chanler (Cyd Charisse) between the front and rear apartments.

We only get to see the front of the apartments near the end of the movie. Here's Claire Quimby (Audrey Totter) arriving...

... and going down an alley to the back, where the movie's denouement occurs.

By horse drawn stage coach, they meant that this is in actuality a drawing of a stage coach executed by horses. Because stage coaches are behind horses, they don't know what they really look like, so the horses mistakenly sketched a wagon. This is the sort of thing that happens all too often when we leave the production of Art to animals, and why we only rarely see equine exhibitions at the Louvre.

They're little figures made from pipe cleaners which play a minor part in the plot. In the scene above, Richard Basehart's character is just moving in, and knocks over the table and lamp. He then introduces himself to Cyd's character, and offers some advice on photography.
