Where'd the bull go?

The fourth pic below is from two years ago as they were starting the renos. The bull was put back but I just noticed it gone again today.

The old Pappas Furs building today at Hamilton and West Pender. Bottom pic is from about 2 1/2 years ago when they were renovating.

Nine months later and the front of the Ormidale is still under wraps. The back side is still not complete and there are now four windows that are boarded up.

I was wondering what was below the ground level at that end of the block.

Thanks for the pics.

I walked right past there today to the BMO and didn't even think of the Bull.

**

A bit disappointed with the panels on the back -
I would have thought they'd use a "radiating" configuration for the panels rather than square tiles.

So nice to see a building facade not broken up into "human scale" sections.

Just realized that the double wide column is because its 2 buildings (phases) butted up against each other.
The double wide column should have recognized that
- maybe with a deep groove down the middle of it
- like the seam in the brickwork above.

The six bay warehouse to the north is from 1910, and the added four bay structure looks like it was added some time in the 1920s or later.

Thanks.
Maybe they'll install a sign or plaque to fill the space.

Looks like the addition was there in 1927:

"View looking North on Granville Street from near Nelson"

"Looking north from 900 block Granville at night Bowling sign belongs to La Salle Recreations at 945 Granville 'Caesar and Cleopatra' playing at Vogue Theatre"

F Buscombe & Co sold china and glass. Fred Buscombe founded the company, and built a couple of substantial (for the time) early buildings for his business, on West Hastings and Cordova, both still standing. By the time the company took space here, in 1917, it was run by Fred's brother, George. There's more about some of the occupants of the building here, and the developer, C H Wilson on Changing Vancouver. Charles Wilson was elected an alderman from 1902 to 1905, and Fred Buscombe was elected mayor in 1905-1906.

Expecting an Improved Ground Level Experience- Vancouver Approves 1810 Alberni

Recently we covered our impressions from the open house for 1810 Alberni, the West End's latest proposed tower. While neither Darren nor I were were able to attend the Development Board Meeting on April 3rd, today we received notice that the application had been approved. Though we don't know all the conditions of that approval yet, we can tell from reading the staff report that the opinions expressed by the public were addressed.

Nice to have alberni streetscape improved, but we better take care of what we currently have. Last evening on my way home I saw two separate groups vandalising the new art gallery plaza. One was a group of 10 or so yahoos on mini BMX bikes hopping up and down the wood benches and other items, often bumping and scraping them really hard. I saw all the mushroom stool lights already scratched up and many dented. The other group were skateboarders tearing up all the stairs and planters they could find. The most infuriating thing was there were no security guards asking them to stop. This plaza will look like a shithole like other parts of rundown Vancouver in no time.
