Proposed rezoning and lane closure in Oliver

April 3, 2018

Residents are invited to an information session about a proposed rezoning and lane closure in the Oliver neighbourhood.

Date: Tuesday, April 10, 2018
Time: 6 - 8 p.m.
Location: Oliver School, Gymnasium, 10227 118 Street NW

The application is to rezone 9918, 9922 and a portion of 9930 - 111 Street NW, from Direct Development Control Provision (DC1) to Site Specific Development Control Provision (DC2).

This proposed site specific zone would permit the development of a 23 storey residential tower, with up to 178 residential dwelling units, within 200m of the Grandin LRT station. A portion of the access lane north of 9922 - 111 Street NW is proposed to be closed for the development. The Oliver Area Redevelopment Plan will also be amended to facilitate the proposed rezoning

The information session will be an opportunity to learn more about the proposal and provide feedback to the City and applicant. Feedback will be summarized in a report to City Council before they make their decision on the rezoning.

Nice that the Valley Line West will link to WEM but my question is, what is the condition of WEM it's quite old and the last time I was there it was really showing its age, a lot of the attractions felt very aged and tacky. Plans for significant Overahaul?
Contemporary clothing, fresh goods (meat/bakery/fish), and groceries are lacking in the Downtown core still.

WEM has been undergoing renovations for awhile now. I believe they have broken it up in phases so it seems the motto has been "slowly but surely". The indoor renovations have been coming along quite nicely, although when you go to some of the less busy, secluded areas you get transported to the 90's.

I think they've begun some exterior work, which IMO is badly needed because from some angles it looks like a Soviet bunker.

wasn't a hardware store also among the list of specifically identified/surveyed "wants" for the core?

^it was up there, although given the nature of of modern hardware stores less likely sadly. The days of a small HH are largely gone versus a big box similar to Westmount. The Bay had a small hardware store a few years ago which I used a lot, but most people didn't know it was there. While you could not order lumber, it had everything needed for setting up an apartment, hanging things, small repair work etc.

Keep in mind though that that example is not Downtown, but across from it. Might matter, might not, but for context.

It is still urban-style and could easily fit downtown. Though I'd prefer a smaller Home Hardware like a lot of neighbourhoods in Toronto and Montreal have. I think Vancouver has a few as well.

I'd love a street-fronting HH on Jasper around 105st.

Lesson 1: Don’t compare Edmonton to Calgary. This will get you a black eye at best or 2 black eyes and a kick in the nuts. Lesson 2 through 100: see Lesson 1 and repeat.

Fare game to compare Edmonton to NYC, YYZ or YVR. So far your posts are just fine.

If you don't mind me asking, what's drawing you to potentially relocate to Edmonton for a tech position? I see why people in that field think of Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa when considering staying in Canada but never hear of people coming to Alberta for jobs in tech.

You need to be a 5th generation Albertan or even a first to get it. Or get a black eye or a kick in the nuts.

WEM has certainly lost the glamour it had in the 1980s, but it's not derelict or anything: it seems like a pretty standard suburban mall, just a really big one. That said, the best solution to Edmonton's woes is as follows: bulldoze WEM, turn it into a pick-up truck dealership with gravel parking lots, and then move the 800 plus stores downtown.
