I wonder what the long term plan is for City Hall? As it stands the municipal government goes way beyond what can be accommodated in the small pre-unicity civic centre complex. There are entire office complexes filled with civic staff, like the Mandarin Building (across from City Hall), the Confederation Building and the Bank of Hamilton on Main, and everyone's favourite, Fort Garry Place.
I wonder if any of those sites would ever be consolidated? The idea of anchoring the Marketlands with, say, a 10 to 15 storey civic office building to house PP&D and another department has some appeal. It would probably make it that much easier to market the rest of the site.

I can only imagine the screeching cries of terror that would come from the vocal fiscal hawks in this city if a new building for civic employees was ever proposed. If the proposed building was anything more than a windowless concrete bunker, I'm certain there would be rioting in the streets.
"As a taxpayer, public sector employees should only be given the bare minimum to do their job. 20 year old recycled equipment and computers bought second hand from the private sector and a concrete cubicle with fluorescent lighting is all that is needed for those on the public dime to do their job properly. Anything else is a waste of my tax dollars." - Most Winnipeggers, probably.
