The North American bid book for the FIFA world cup was released and includes some info on Atlanta as a potential host:

"Mercedes-Benz Stadium, completed and opened in 2017, is designed to create the ultimate live-game experience, boasting several unique architectural features and some of the most fan-friendly accommodation in all of professional sports. The stadium regularly welcomes 75,000 fans to the most extraordinary visual experience of any stadium in the world. The Video Halo Board is the largest video board in professional sports, wrapping 360 degrees around and measuring 18 m tall, with over 19,000 m2 of screen to view live action, highlights, and iso-cameras. There are more video displays than any stadium in the world, with more than 2,000 TV screens around the concourses and a state-of-the-art audio system so that fans will never miss any of the action. There are over 1,800 wireless access points, optimized cell service, and a mobile app designed to be a stadium remote control. The LED-wrapped main column also provides game highlights, covering 620 m2 and standing 30 m high. With 7,500 club seats and more than 9,000 m2 of space dedicated to climate controlled club and premium areas, Mercedes-Benz Stadium sets new standards for luxury, comfort, and convenience at every event. It also offers a variety of suite options, including a number uniquely located at field level, designed to offer first-class amenities and personal service. It's proposed as a semi-final site. It confirms that natural grass would be brought in.

That's really exciting - I was hoping (and thinking) Atlanta would be a proposed semi-final site! That's huge on a world scale. I assume the new LA Stadium is the final's host (and they should be). Anyone know the other semi site - Dallas?

Other semi is Dallas. Meadowlands proposed for the final.

Has anyone seen plans for the development on Blvd Pl NE and Glen Iris? I think I remember it being a town home community, but I never saw any renderings nor do I know the developer.

They've taken out a lot of old growth trees already.

No because the host city for the Olympics has to spend billions for infrastructure and sporting venues. Mercedes Benz stadium is already built so Atlanta would not need to sink money to build a facility.

The Georgia AIA Awards are coming up and they have a "People's Choice Award" where people can vote. These are Georgia firms, so not all projects are located in Georgia, but figured people might like to see some of these projects with descriptions. Specifically, there is an "Unbuilt" category with projects like The Hub at Peachtree Center, 350 Memorial, No. 2 Opus Place.

Right, had ACOG blown way more $$$ simply for the wow factor with incredible venue design the '96 Summer Games would have lost a boatload instead of breaking even. I'll take the latter any day. There was so much talk about how commercialized the Centennial Games were but without those numerous sponsorships, once again, the games would have been a big financial loss.

I was heavily involved in fight to save Engineer's Bookstore and preserve that neighborhood and wanted to pass along an update.

Have talked to several people who have confirmed that there is a creative business that is going to lease out the space. Construction looks to have started inside, and the company will be preserving many of the bookstore elements (like the wall-to-wall bookcases).

Obviously a huge win for preservation that this + the whole district was saved and protected; and excited to see that there is demand for this kind of workspace.

I was a little surprised by this headline in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, but is this something we need to worry about?

No, it set up special taxing districts that commercial and multi family property owners could vote to join as a group to increase taxes with the proceeds going toward trails/connections to the Beltline. It is illegal under the GA constitution and would require a constitutional amendment before a law such as this could be passed and implemented in GA. Law would be similar to the transportation districts such as Cumberland and Perimeter but much smaller in scale and purpose.

The beltline's primary funding mechanism-- the TAD is untouched and still generating money-- this bill provided an additional source of funding--
