That's an impressive view of Kitchener's downtown area. It's really turned around since I was at UW in the 90's. I had to take a look at Google Street view just to make sure it actually was Kitchener.

ION should be a huge game changer for those cities. Glad to see that project about to launch.

As much as I love the place, I'd be hard-pressed to put "great" and "Kitchener" in the same sentence, but yes, it is definitely getting better. There are apparently $1.2B in projects in the pipeline for Downtown over the next few years.

LRT

West end Edmonton residents can take comfort the LRT extension to Lewis Estates is listed in Alberta’s budget with money ramping up after 2021.

The government promised $3 billion in LRT spending for Edmonton and Calgary over 10 years funded through the carbon levy. If Edmonton gets half of that, the provincial contribution would be enough to fund the west LRT and invest in other lines.

In his budget speech, Ceci promised more. He said his team is working with Calgary and Edmonton to write a joint “long-term provincial transit investment plan” to support growth in the cities and surrounding regions.

Trust me so did I. I needed to fact check before making that post. That street reminds me a lot of St Claire Ave in Toronto now.

Logical combination of the above points would be an REM extension along the Masouche Line as far as Anjou...

1) This would mitigate criticism about Masouche Trains swamping REM at the transfer

2) REM are already planning to run extra trains just as far as Correspondence for the Masouche Line.

3) If elevated and partially repurposed/beside existing rail, then this might be competive cost-wise with extending an underground subway with the Blue Line extension. 10km at existing grade and 3km elevated (10*75mil + 3*200min + 2 elevated stations at 100mil each = ~1.6 to 2 billion)

4) Mitigate adding additional ridership to the congested Orange line.

5) Cost savings of piggy-backing onto Alstom rolling stock order

Montreal finally got the funding for the blue line extension. 3.9G$ for 5.8km and 5 stations seems to be outrageous in price, especially that's it's flat terrain and a single bore tunnel.

It's still 4x per km than the Laval metro extension which had a high speed switch connection under a major river and a garage included in the price.

Those Valley streetcar vehicles look good! I'll take a look where that line will be going in Edmonton....I'm unsure if I saw the route before.

Can those Valley Line LRT cars be hooked up to other ones, as to complete 2, 3 or 4 train consists?

It'd be easier to swallow if they also included a 1 station extension past Snowdon. The fact that they're NOT doing that I find outrageous. Here was their chance.

ALSO, what good is a blue line extension that will bring tens of thousands of new commuters into the orange line when it is already MASSIVELY packed every rush hour?

Anyways still glad they're doing it. Long overdue.

The REM is expected to reduce crowding on the orange line by 10-15%.

It does seem kinda odd that a blue line extension west of Snowdon never seems to be a priority, ever since the plan was originally cancelled decades ago. The area definitely seems like it should be a priority.. kinda odd that with so many transit expansion ideas now coming into the pipeline in Montreal that this one isn't making a comeback.

NDG has a fairly ok access to the Metro and Hampstead/Cote-St-Luc don’t have the density for it. Nobody’s been really advocating for the Metro in that part of town anyway.

The East however, has density AND no efficient access, as the bus lines on Jean-Talon are over capacity. Also, there is much more employment along the Metropolitan Expressway as well (big employment hub in Anjou notably) so the need is definitely there.

To add to the above.

As per Translink's 10 year plan for transit expansion in Metro Vancouver, the Millenium line extension to Arbutus and the new Surrey-Guilford-Newton lrt line are now fully funded.

Councillor pushes for fix on Metro LRT's 'greatest pinch point'

IK20170329-009.JPG by BLACK STAR III, on Flickr

City buses, ambulances and private vehicles are still getting tied up at Edmonton’s worst Metro Line LRT crossing, and one councillor is pushing Edmonton to again look for a fix.

“I just think we want to keep on it,” said Ward 2 Coun. Bev Esslinger, who won council’s support to take another look late last week. City officials are due back in three months with costs and options for tearing up track to raise or tunnel the line where it crosses 111 Avenue.

“That’s still the greatest pinch point,” she said. “It was flagged by the public and by the traffic study. People are still frustrated (and) we’re going to have the LRT for a long time.”
