From what I understand it's a low priority project. It technically took effect Jan 1 but it won't be signed as such until time / resources allow it.

Signs are starting to pop up in London on City Streets in the past week. They're up in both ways at Richmond / Sunningdale and Wonderland / Sunningdale, and a few found along Wonderland Road closer to the 402.

I haven't seen or heard of the MTO starting their work yet at their interchanges.

It’s weird seeing a Hwy 4 shield on Wonderland north of Southdale.

Wonder how long it will take for Google Maps to update once it is fully signed. Since they got rid of the public Map Maker it can take months or even a year to get changes made.

From what I know, government authorities have the ability to make changes to Google Maps easier than just typical members. Hope the change can be complete in the coming few weeks.

Most highways (not expressways) have an urban component. This is no different than what #4 was before except it makes a lot more sense with the routing now.

I wish they would consider extending Bradley Ave. E to 4 lanes, from Wellington to the 401, there is just way too much traffic there, reminds me of the old Southdale Rd.

If it is a highway on paper, then it really must be a highway. It must be a highway for really tiny cars where they top out at 50 km/hr max speed and they stay very close to each other to form a train like earth worm at most hours of the day.

what is the point of designating Wonderbread Road a Highway? Provincial funding?

It is ridiculous that it is considered a highway, which in theory should mean a throughway (i.e., traffic flows, which it rarely does during daylight hours). Stop start, jam, some — trying to make a left hand turn on the southbound lane near Exeter, backing up traffic...

I hate Wonderland Road. It is congested, ugly, congested, and ugly.

It's for ease of transiting an area. The prior routing made no sense whatsoever. Richmond to downtown, left on Angel, right on Clarence, right on York, left at Wortley, right on Horton left on Wharncliffe to Lambeth and left at Colonel Talbot. This new routing makes complete sense. It means nothing to anyone local, it doesn't change anything for anyone local.

Main St Lambeth getting a major do over this year. Will go from 4 lanes to 2 lanes plus a centre turn lane, as well as new boulevards, trees, sidewalks and on street parking.

It's only labelled as a highway for route consistency. This is done all over the U.S. too where U.S. highways continue through cities as normal city streets so that someone travelling through the city but wanting to stay on the highway can find their way through the entire city.

What is the new route through London?
The new route connects the existing provincially-maintained legs of Highway 4 to the north and south of the city via Richmond Street, Sunningdale Road, and Wonderland Road, as well as a short overlap with Highway 401 between the Colonel Talbot Road and Wonderland Road interchanges. Refer to the attached PDF for a map overview showing the former and new route of Highway 4.

What was the rationale for this work?
The signed route for Highway 4 through London has remained largely unchanged since 1920. As the city has grown it no longer functions as a practical routing for provincial traffic. The new route will provide a more direct through route connecting the north and south legs of Highway 4, and as well as providing a more practical connection between the Highway 401 and 402 corridors and areas north of the city.

Why is this work being done?
Existing signage along provincial highways in the London area was scheduled to be updated due to the existing signs being damaged, faded, or out of date. Meanwhile, the City of London had noted that the signs along the old Highway 4 route through the city were in need of updating as well. Staff from both organizations realized this was an opportunity to work together to correct these deficiencies as part of regular signage updates.

How was the preferred route determined?
City of London staff identified the route along city streets between the provincially owned legs of the highway, Richmond Street at the northern city limit to Highway 401 in the south. Consideration was given to traffic volumes, current and future roadway cross section, and the roads ability to handle commercial traffic.

Why was Sunningdale Road chosen instead of Fanshawe Park Road (former Highway 22)?
Currently both travel times and traffic volumes are considerably less on Sunningdale Road compared to Fanshawe Park Road between Wonderland Road and Richmond Street. The roads share an identical classification (arterial) and are both 24-hour truck routes. Improvements to expand this part of Sunningdale Road from 2 to 4 lanes is scheduled to occur in 2020.

Is the ownership of any road changing hands?
No, all sections of road from Highway 401 to the northern city limit will continue to be owned and maintained by the City of London. Street naming and addresses will be unchanged. Highway 401, Highway 402, and Highway 4 (Colonel Talbot Road) south of Highway 401 will continue to be owned and maintained by the provincial Ministry of Transportation. This is strictly an agreement regarding guide/wayfinding signage between the City and MTO.

Sure go ahead and install electronic signs that provide info on the trains. Talk to CP and CN and get their real time GPS data as the railways already know where every train is. Display that data on the signs and were good to go.

Meanwhile in Greater Toronto, those coloured highway message signs cost 500k each!

City has held PIC on Southdale West widening. Plans look very nice with planter medians running the length of Southdale. Interesting as well is the city is recommending a 2 lane roundabout for Southdale & Colonel Talbot. As well the plan suggests that whenever Bradley is extended to meet Pack Rd & Bostwick it will also be a roundabout.

I'm not out that area of town as often, but when I am traffic is chaotic. Hopefully gets done soon.
