They aren't the nicest towers, but they are revitalizing a previously dead part of downtown Edmonton, so maybe try to get some context before shitting all over something.

Anyone know when the Baccarat Casino will be leaving lol?

Honestly, it's hard not to cheer for Edmonton after seeing this:

2012

2017

revitalizing by building a gated community for rich folks? because that's the only people who will get to live/stay/shop there. it's gentrification, it's a bad deal for most citizens for Edmonton, and it's tacky as hell.

I don't see how an office tower, condos and an arena represent gentrification or anything bad but alright.

There was literally nothing there but a casino and a Staples. And tons of surface parking.

there was low income housing (bought out by Katz) and a community services centre that is trying to figure out what to do.. katz nor this development has done anything for the people that frequent/live in this neighbourhood. they've plopped a bunch of million dollar revenue properties in a neighbourhood that has for decades struggled with housing.

ok, so the buildings won't have security/be for a certain class of people/closed to the general public? people need to expand their definition of gated communities because it absolutely includes developments like this

Give it a rest Horse. Hardworking people with money have the right to some exclusive living. In terms of design, you live in the armpit of the country where nothing is happening. JW and Stantec are beautiful towers, and your taste is dubious to say the least.

Are you for real? you realize there is a public element to go with the private element. You can go in the plaza all you want, but obviously can't just walk into a private residence or office building, one of which houses City of Edmonton staff, not a bunch of plutocrats as you are trying to make out lol.

That's not fair either. The excitement of two new tallest across SSP Canada is understandable however, comparison are being made, in particular, to Calgary.

Most skylines are seeing dramatic intensification through height. Most skylines have an Ice District type development being built. Let's keep in mind Edmonton before the Ice District may not have had the tallest skyline but, it still was one of the larger skylines with good height in the country.

you mean people who steal labour/resources? because that's how you get rich in our economy. and no, no one has the right to "exclusive" living, especially when it's partially paid for by tax incentives from the city

and i honestly, i don't give a shit about architecture compared to the way we design buildings/cities for people. that should be the focus, not how high you can build something.

why not though? why should those people be afraid of random citizens coming into an office building or residential lobby? do they have reasons to be afraid of everyday people?

Blah blah blah. Jealous much? The few examples of incentives here result in a massive amount of private investments, something your city knows nothing about.

JW and Stantec are tall towers in the Canadian context.

Are you actually asking this question? private property is private for a reason, if you are so eager to share, then just leave your front door open and invite people to linger in your house.

Yes. Many cases where angry/deranged citizens have violently lashed out against government or co-workers.

By the way, can you point out where you see social housing in this picture? https://www.google.ca/maps/@53.5462645,-...HawdcAHx-pWtLb4MueVOQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

okay, so you're advocating for a system where rich people get tax incentives as long as they use it to build housing/offices for rich folks/corporations?
