I think there is still a chance for 10-1 in the 2nd generation but we have to do something about the loophole for term limits. Tovo is going 3rd term and Pool could as well in 2 years.

Your right it's 8-2-1. With the 2 being at large.

We are stuck for now with the current system but that doesn't mean we have to be forever. As the city grows, so will the city council if they intend to have a ratio of representation to population. At large council seats can be added. Both Houston and Dallas have hybrid systems. We need to push for at large seats going forward.

We are truely in odd times for me to actually favor Tovo over Kitchen or Pool. I agree term limits are needed but if I had a choice between those 3, I would choose Tovo. She is by no means perfect but she has mellowed on certain issues over the years, probably due to representing Downtown, but I think she has a better understanding of how the city functions as a whole.

The city charter is not designed to expand the council. That can be changed but it would require the same kind of government overhaul and vote that 10-1 did. That took a ton of community support, organization and unity.

Based on current law, in 2021 a restricting commission will be formed to adjust the boundaries of the existing 10 districts based on population from the 2020 census except for adjustments needed to comply with the Voting Rights Laws.

I like the metric of patents/1k workers they use. Gauging the degree of innovation is much more indicative of what Amazon (or any large tech company for that matter) is looking for as opposed to MOAR TECH WORKERS.

This isn't really different than anything else we have seen. Rankings that emphasize per capita percentage metrics rank Austin high. Rankings that emphasize absolute numbers rank Austin mid to low. There have been a few other rankings that have come out that have not had Austin very high but I didn't post them because it's all more of the same crap we already know.

I think the only potential wrinkle here (more of a funny, haha than real insight) is that the Post is owned by Bezos.

Jeff Bezos (IMO) already view's Austin like many of us---IE a city that is not ready to grow up. Austin doesn't even know how to run its own community -- infrastructure is god awful, the light rail was a patch job on existing tracks, museums are better in Abilene, "master planned" Waller Creek is now a failed collapsing disaster and the only major sport's franchise is about ready to run away. JB is only pacifying the existing Whole Foods employees so he can tell them Amazon did their due diligence. Don't get excited, it ain't happening while Mayor Adler is still riding the coattails of Austin's success from 2015 and prior.
