If the US chain liquidates, it's hard to imagine the Canadian chain surviving........

Look at how long stores Like Woolworth, and Woolco lasted in Canada After the US chains had defunct.

Woolworth, and there discount store Woolco. Could have probably continued if they where not sold to Walmart.

Woolworth as a corporate entity is actually still in existence, they now trade under the name Footlocker. They had bought the Footlocker chain back in the 1970's and when the Woolworth & Wolco chains closed or were sold off, they changed their corporate name to Footlocker. It was similar to HBC/Zellers. At one point I had hoped perhaps Sears could move in this direction, the corporate name would continue and they would sell Craftsman & Kenmore products to other retailers.

I had hoped Sears Canada had changed there name to Simpsons, and changed there model to what they called Sears 2.0. But it seems they had waited to late. I'm sure as Simpsons, and with the Sears 2.0 style bussiness model they could have kept there stores in Canada.

So what you're saying is... LEGO sets at liquidation prices? I'm down.

Sears Canada would've had a much better hope of survival if Sears Holdings hadn't been bleeding them dry to support itself.

Amongst the recent spate of news regarding the retail carnage in North America, a little good news on the local front:

Giant Tiger has confirmed a third store for the metro area, this time in Riverview, apparently to be located in the Riverview Mall (of all places), in the old Save-Easy space.

Opening will be this summer.

1.5 MILLION views for the [Moncton] Retail Thread!

This has taken almost exactly 6 years to accomplish.

According to the T&T, what's going on presently at the former Sears at Champlain Place is merely "phase 1" of the stores redevelopment and consists only of interior demolition. The building permit value issued from the city of Dieppe is for $350,000.

A spokesperson for Cadillac Fairview said it was "too soon" to comment on future development plans for the space.

Personally, I'm convinced that a decision has already been made and that an announcement is forthcoming in the not-too-distant future.

If it is Simons, I suspect concurrent announcements for stores at both the Halifax Shopping Centre and Champlain Place to be issued at the same time.

If the space is to be subdivided for several retailers, they will likely want to wait until each retailer involved is prepared to issue their own announcement.

This is the reason why everything is currently so hush-hush.

Report in today's news that negotiations are underway to bring an IMAX to NB. States that Moncton and Saint John are both under consideration. However news article left me with a strong impression that Moncton was the likely landing spot. Freddy not in the running due to the condition of the current outdated cinemas. For those of you behind the firewall:https://www.telegraphjournal.com/daily-gleaner/story/100535480/imax?source=story-rotator

Already noted on the main Moncton thread, but certainly appropriate for the [Retail] thread. Thanks for posting.

This was my response on the main thread:

Quote:
I can envisage several scenarios:

1) - Cineplex Trinity Drive - this theatre complex needs to be renovated. I could see them sacrificing one or two of the existing auditoriums to allow an IMAX to be installed as part of the renovations.

2) - Cineplex Dieppe - if located here, this could be part of a bigger plan including a possible Rec Room (also owned by Cineplex). If Chapters were rebranded as Indigo and relocated to the old Sears space in the main mall at CF Champlain Place, this would free up space in the old Crystal Palace building for both an IMAX and a Rec Room. This could be quite exciting!!

3) - New Brunswick Museum - The government of NB has recently announced that the NB Museum will be relocated to the old Coast Guard site on the Saint John waterfront. It is not uncommon for IMAX screens to be located in museums. This could be a possibility. The problem with this however is that museum IMAX's don't often screen IMAX format commercial films. I think this is the least likely possibility.
There is definitely something brewing at CF Champlain. It's very interesting to speculate this could include a relocated Indigo, an IMAX and a Rec Room.

And, if one were allowed to think entirely outside the box - how about replacing the Trinity Drive Cineplex with an entirely new building (but within Wheeler Park) where the Costco currently sits.

Lots of room there for an eight cinema multiplex and an IMAX.

So apparently Crombie RIET owns the Sobeys in CF Champlain.
http://www.crombie.ca/property/champlain-place-sobeys
They also own the Sobeys on Regis street. According to their site, they bought both of them (presumably from Sobeys) on April 22nd, 2008.

They also own the VIA station, which they acquired on March 23rd, 2006.

Crombie REIT is Sobeys. Crombie is part of Empire which owns Sobeys, so it all comes full circle.

FAO Schwartz is making a comeback, they are planning on opening a lot of new stores, they have a deal to open in a number of Canadian Airports. But I thought Toys R Us bought out FAO schwartz, weird that the FAO is expanding while Toys R us is dying. Unless Toys R Us sold it soon after they bought it.

They have Woolworth in Australia and South Africa and other places, the ones in South Africa were really nice, much more upscale looking than the discount stores they used to be like in Canada. The food halls were really nice.

I wish Marks & Spencer were still in Canada, they had great snacks lol

Did they have Marks & Spencer in the Maritimes? I know we had them in BC.

I remember Marks & Spencer I do not remember any locations being in Atlantic Canada though.

I seen Woolworths in Africa, and Australia, and also they have Woolworths Food in Africa that looks like a higher end grocery store. The ones in Australia have been renamed Big W. The Australian Woolworths stores that are left are there Grocery stores.

As for FAO Swartz it Defunct in 2015. But stayed open as an online store. Toys are us owned it from 2009-2016 then it was sold for an undisclosed amount to the Three Sixty Group, and they have run it since as an online retailer.

Marks & Spencer used to be next to Sears (roughly where the Laura store is now) and next to Betty Rubin (when her store was active there). It closed in the mid 1990s when the entire chain decamped Canada.

I liked Marks. The clothes were decent and their little food hall was interesting to poke around in.

Ha, that's funny, I mentioned that back on March 1 about an IMAX fitting into the equation when the discussion was about the Rec Room and the old Sears location.

I thought Kent's wanted to take over the old Costco spot.... or that was the rumor I had heard.
