Heard from someone who works there that they are looking to move into a single level rather than being spread out over multiple floors like their current space.

Seeing how many companies, like Ceridian, seem interested in the massive floor plate-type building, I wonder if we may yet see a mid-rise office building purpose-built to meet that need? Something like this behemoth in Omaha built to house Union Pacific's offices, and which was all the buzz when I first joined SSP:

Well in about a year 2 more buildings should start to rise at TNS.

I don't really get this new desire. Sure obviously it makes sense and is easier gernerally, but when dealing with larger companies:

a) at some point you have to realize it just isn't that feasible (unless you move to the edge of the city and build a new building)
b) usually when you're at the size where this becomes an issue, you have lots of departments that rarely (if ever) interact and don't need to be together on one floor anyway.

There's still lots of good lots downtown for something like that! Lots on Donald; Fort; could take the SkyCity lot AND the one on the other side of Garry and do a RBCCC-style building over the street.

🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 because the WCB lot would probably be the best spot for something like that, but we know that's not happening. Someone should start lobbying the provincial government to ban funded parking for provincial employees, you know, for savings purposes.

I think it's more a matter of culture than simply sharing space. I once worked for a large company that ran like a well oiled machine despite having people on multiple floors of a building...going up or down a couple of floors was no big deal. By contrast, another place I worked at was an acrimonious mess that ended up falling apart despite having nearly everyone on one floor of an office building.

For whatever reason though, some companies place a lot of value on that type of "entire departments on a floor" arrangement. It's not hard to imagine a shorter version of that UP building - say, maybe only a dozen storeys tall - filling up with tenants.

If a beastly building like that with a huge footprint ever gets built, I'd love to see it on Donald between York and St. Mary... that would swallow up one of the last remaining giant surface parking lots downtown in one fell swoop.

^Agreed. So long as the city enforces street-level retail from here on out.

At 300 Main they are reinforcing the foundation. Some of the columns are being reinforced by drilling a hundred, may be exaggerated but not by much, holes in them and installing 2 inch rebar and pouring a foot of new concrete around the columns. So the 36 inch columns become 60 inch columns. Some of these columns go right through the food court and Shopper's so expect closures.

^That sounds like a ton of effort for something that was supposed to be ready for another building. I get the height thing mentioned by Jeff earlier. But man. Lots of work. Drilling holes in columns to add rebar and a foot of concrete???!! Lol sounds like mickey mouse operation but hey what do I know.

I sure hope Shindico doesn't try to get Ceridian to move to a location outside of downtown. It would have been great to have Western Financial Group downtown instead of out by Polo Park. It would not be good for downtown to lose Ceridian.

It's already built - we call it The Bay.

That thought crossed my mind but in the end you'd be stuck with a massively expensive project and a less than ideal configuration.

So it turns out TD will actually be taking a massive portion of the mall up, they repainted the temporary drywall advertising 300 Main to TD colours. Stretches from Freshii all the way around the corner and back to the Fort St. entrance. So yeah, looks like quite a lot will be moving over.

I heard that only some columns needed reinforcing, but they decided to do a couple more. Better to over rather than underbuild.

Or maybe they're reinforcing more because they've decided to go even taller... Just throwing that idea out there

That's the old Grand & Toy space that's been empty for years - it was L-shaped and cut behind the Perths and the Nature's Wildlife Window giftshop (is that what it was called? Had cat sweaters for sale that always made me chuckle). The giftshop's been gone for a while. Perths just relocated down by the Chiropractor's in the last couple of months. I guess you need some office and meeting areas in what I suppose will be the main TD branch?

Is a Shoppers expansion going in where Gary's and Chamberlyn's used to be?

That would be awesome, especially for the later hours now that tenants will keep that area populated. Looks like that's the site office for the next 2 years first though.

Just a guess, but I think that's likely where the connections (elevator, etc) from the mall to the new tower will be.

I think the elevators will be where the kiosk that sold dinner pastries was located. It's the one beside the shoe repair shop. That way the elevator can access the parking levels.
