The best description of this thread I have ever heard. This was after I complained about the Calgary forum and said I only really visit the Canada section anymore.

An aside, long ago, I became a fan of Molson because of his walled city of Kowloon thread.
I never saw your Walled City of Kowloon thread Molson.

Include The Sheepdogs in the garbage bin for CanCon, while I find that The Stampeders are very under played.

Interesting. If it was originally posted in ‘04 that explains why I never read it. I only started lurking around ‘06. Thanks for sharing the link.

Thanks for the compliment! I have been fascinated by the KWC since I first saw an aerial shot in a magazine as a teenager.

Banal, but that would be considered an upgrade considering the usual stucco commie blocks they are STILL building down here in London the lesser.

It’s funny there was some decent CanCon in the 90’s that doesn’t get a lot of airplay now but did back then. I’m thinking of bands like Rhymes with Orange, the Killjoys, Econoline Crush, the Odds, the Age of Electric, Limb Lifter, the Trews. Then of course you have heavy rotation favourites that aren’t bad like the Tragically Hip. More Indie stuff like Tegan and Sara, Wintersleep, Metric, Feist, Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade are also decent.

Then there’s the new rock bands I detest like The Dudes and the Arkells. Then you get into the Nickelback knockoffs like Theory of a Deadman and Three Days Grace and Default. Shudder...
Killjoys: Today I Hate Everyone was my anthem.

All those bands and you don't mention The Pursuit of Happiness.

My favorite all-time Canadian band might be Lava Hay. So syrupy and folky. Makes my brain rot, but in a good way. I'll also throw out my absolute favorite band to see in concert: Jerry Jerry and the Sons of Rhythm Orchestra. Jerry has a special place in the history of my drunken days.

I confess to not knowing those last two. Another major one I forgot to mention that was quite popular and decent was I Mother Earth.

I saw Jerry Jerry and his bandmates play 5 times during the late eighties and early nineties. What a great show. The band was then based in Montreal (which had the best underground scene at that time in Canada). My buddy was friends with Blake Cheetah (bassist, who later joined the Asexuals...another great band that I was connnected to). I was mostly drunk during the late 80s-early 90s.

My favorite live Canadian Band of the era was hands-down, these guys:

recordsale

^best Canadian hardcore album of all time. In fact, one of my favorite albums of all time, for any genre.

Jerry Jerry was best live. I saw them a few times and the smaller the crowd, the better the show. Twenty people in the bar and he's walking around talking with everyone mic in one hand, beer in the other. And yes, late 80s, early 90s.

And so much good hardcore music from Canada. SNFU, Nomeansno, DOA, Propoghandi, which lead into the pop versions like Wheat Chiefs, Doughboys. I still have a soft spot for Doughboys' Happy Accidents. Which makes me also think of Sons of Freedom from Vancouver.

Doughboys' John Kastner was the older brother of my classmate and sometimes friend. He first joined the Asexuals (which I was a big fan of, and who also contained another older brother of a classmate/friend of mine) before the Doughboys. We all went to the Big Hunk of Shit (BHS, aka Beaconsfield High School, in Beaconsfield, Quebec).

Kastner later dated and had a child with Megan Draper (Jessica Pare), who was friends with one of my younger brothers.

I haven't heard Prozzak, unless it was a one time thing on the radio. Hearing SNFU, it sounds like they have some inspiration from the Misfits, the first song (The Ceiling), really makes me think of the Misfits record from '82. SNFU sounds like an interesting band, I'll give them more of a listen. I can really hear that distinct early punk sound in their music.

So have we hipsterized the "Ugly Thread" by ironically listing some of the best bands from the 80/90's??

BTW - a couple nominees for best bar bands from that time frame were the punks, namely Forgotten Rebels and Dayglo Abortions.

And no matter how drunk I was I couldn't stand the campus stalwarts of The Spoons, Gowan or David Wilcox

As for Indies from then, don't forget Grapes of Wraith!
