OPG Mission Island literally does — all, it's been just sucking money out of OPG's coffers. Throw the power plant in to sweeten the deal. Just give it to NorOnt. That will guarantee Thunder Bay gets that processor. It's the only way OPG will rid itself of that useless waste of a facility.

As for Ikea markets: Winnipeg and Quebec have over 1,000,000 people within a few hours drive, as does Halifax, and London isn't too far off. Those stores aren't just serving the market, they're serving entire regions around them. Sudbury only has around 400,000 within the same distance, and Ottawa has an Ikea, so just as Thunder Bayers go to Winnipeg's Ikea, Ikea probably bets on most people in Sudbury going to Ottawa. Lots of Thunder Bayers have Costco memberships and go to the stores in Duluth or Winnipeg.

We go to Toronto. It is closer.

It does nothing economically for Ontario, or has not as of yet. Its not totally useless though if one can imagine it as a very expensive demonstration plant. You can bet many jurisdictions around the globe are watching the T-Bay & Atikokan GS's to examine their effectiveness, on all Ontarians' dime. There is still a lot of interest in biomass power.

I don't think the province/OPG would give the station to Noront, however, I could see them giving it to First Nations. For that generating station to be able to produce power at a economical rate for a Noront processing plant would require a change in fuel source though... which would not be so easy.

OPG would likely have to retain any liability when it comes to cleanup/site remediation. There is zero chance NorOnt takes it as is/where is.

Paint drying is more exciting. OPG has changed its vendor payment software twice since the last time that thing put a single MW into the grid.

I've been hearing that it's really between Sudbury and Timmins for NorOnt's proposed facility. I'm hoping that Timmins gets it but I think that Sudbury is an easier choice for the company.

A lot of people think that the facility may never actually be built. Cliffs Resources proposed a huge smelter in Capreol (Greater Sudbury) but the company later pulled out of the Ring of Fire which meant no smelter for Capreol.

If they put it in the Sudbury area, it will be in Coniston where the twin stacks are.

In Timmins it would be at the current site of the Kidd (Glencore) concentrator and former refinery smelter in Hoyle.

In Thunder Bay it would be located at we have no idea, we don't think — through well enough to actually be a serious contender in anything.

London has far more people within two hours of it than hailifax does, not even close when you consider just Windsor and Kitchener, Let alone all the other smaller cities in the region!

I would have to agree Sudbury and Timmins are most likely. Timmins is likely second choice given the smaller size of the community, and everything that entails.

Several residents of the Coniston area are quite upset though that the Sudbury bid identified Coniston as the preferred location (and kept it under wraps). Noront has stated they will not consider building the processor anywhere local residents don't support the project. This may present a problem for Sudbury, depending on how aggressively Coniston's residents rally against the project.

Publicly available information regarding Thunder Bay-FWFN's bid is quite scarce. The bid has identified McKellar & Mission Islands as the preferred location after it was determined not enough space exists on FWFN lands anywhere. Those is both rail & deep water access at this location. Having not seen the bid myself, I really can't comment on how good or bad/incomplete Thunder Bay-FWFN's bid was.

Then it won't be Thunder Bay, either.

Very possible... however, the outcry to date has been less than in Sudbury. On the other hand, people here (thunder bay) wait to complain until the shovels are ready to hit the ground.

The site in Timmins is full of toxic waste and is about the same size in area as the built-up part of Timmins. It is in the upper right corner of this view: https://www.google.ca/maps/@48.5183131,-81.2778451,18769m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en

THUNDER BAY

Tenders are out right now for the following right now in Thunder Bay, work to be performed this coming construction season:
-Court Street Reconstruction - Wilson St. to Bay St.
-Edward Street Reconstruction - Churchill Dr. to Parkway Dr.
-Miles Street Storm Sewer - Edward St. to Birchwood Cres.
-Main Street Bridge Rehabilitation

Reid's Heritage Construction, based on southern Ontario, will be undertaking a 16 month project in Thunder Bay, starting this year. The developer builds multi-unit residential projects, along with entire subdivisions under their home building division. More details to come on this one...

Thunder Bay

I would guess that Reid's Heritage Construction will be completing the condos at the Fort William Country Club.

Fundraising for the Thunder Bay Art Gallery waterfront location looks like it's off to a good start: $5 million from each the city and the province and $600,000 in private donations already.

Actually, its confirmed to be the two multi-unit buildings that are going in on Leslie Ave. (south end, near Cumberland).

I actually wasn't sure the new art gallery would attract near enough funding to go. I have been very wrong to date. Anyone who doubts the potential impact of the arts on the economic well-being of communities ought to do some reading... arts can easily do more for a local economy now than traditional large scale manufacturing.

The city approved a 17 unit condo building slated for Nugent St. on what I'd consider the fringes of downtown Port Arthur. The multi-tiered building will be as high as 6 stories, and the developer & architect are stating they are making efforts to ensure it fits the character of the area. An underground parking structure will also be included.

Despite this, several area residents appeared before council to voice concerns/opposition. This type of development is exactly what the province is demanding of municipalities, so it was passed. Those who object aren't only trying to stop the development in their own backyard, but are also asking everyone to pay higher taxes.

Lakehead Manor, currently at Vickers & Donald St., is going to be re-developed in the future. This comes from the new owner, Southbridge Care Homes, who has had their purchase of Lakehead Manor, Roseview Manor & Pinewood Court approved by the province.

Hearing rumblings we should hear some news on the new district jail to be built in Thunder Bay by the province.

The province also provided the Thunder Bay International Airport Authority with $5 million for renovations. Those renovations are already well underway, with the superstructure for the addition on the south side of the terminal up, and work beginning on the interior of the existing portion of the terminal.

I cant confirm , but I heard that Southbridge has bought or is in the process of purchasing land for a new Lakehead Manor home . The said site is located on the vacant land by the highway and Oliver rd , next to Innova Park ??

Heard that the new jail is a for sure go , to be built out at current site on hwy 61 , no timeline.
The airport work I see has construction going on the south side , you mentioned north side ?
