Probably not as big an issue initially, but will grow after stage 2 (even on the Trillium Line), what if a cyclist is already onboard when the train fills up? Not only is it occupying 3 seats, but it could be difficult to maneuver the bike through the crowds to the doors.

The designated area is right next to the door.

I sure hope that wheelchair users have priority over cyclists to this designated area.

Montreal now allows bikes on the metro during rush hour.

True, but there is a pillar in the way. I still say it would be awkward if the train is full, especially when the platform is on the opposite side.

From what I've read, it does seem like wheelchairs and strollers have priority over bikes, but I don't know what would happen in the scenario that a cyclist gets on a full train and then a passenger in a wheelchair wants to get on in the next stop.

It'd be awkward for anyone using that designated area. It wouldn't be a problem exclusive to bikes, and it isn't exclusive to the trains. The same thing happens on buses too.

Good Day...

well, we have had fights over competing wheelchairs demanding service, holding the bus up,
and competing strollers, and competing strollers .vs. wheelchairs, ....so....

'fraid I can and probably will see fights over bikes .vs. all of the above.

Same ol' proviso - most are good, but a few ruin it for all !!!!
Very tiring, fighting the same ol' fights !

I don't see Rack and Roll on the buses being used to capacity at rush hour, I suspect similar usage, maybe just slightly better with the LRT. People will still have to ride to the station and there's a catchment factor, and once most cyclists are out the door and dressed for the weather they would just prefer a continuous journey. Rain or strong winds on the way home might change things a bit for some people, though.

The Confederation line will have 10+K pphpd capacity, but is current peak demand really going to top out more than 5 to 6K? Total transit a.m. rush into the core is roughly 36K from all directions and automatically discounting 20% from Gatineau, that's less than 30K spread out over 3.5 hours shared between the LRT and all incoming buses. I guess it remains to be seen later this year.

If we are having conflicts between bikes, strollers and wheelchairs on crowded trains, it is time to be investing in more trains.

Hopefully, a cyclist will have the sense of positioning himself or herself near a door.

The problem comes when they actually block access to a door. I see this on buses all the time with passengers standing right in front of the back door with no intention to exit at the next stop.

This is no different than the issues they have had with the design of some streets in the city. (cars, parking, bikes, transit, pedestrians). There are a number of places in the city where there is room for a number of the above but definitely not all..or at least not all well. Rank those in order and the street design will easily follow.

Council is completely unwilling to set any sort of priority as it entails telling someone else (a voter) that they are a lower priority/less important.

The stroller vs wheelchair debate on buses a few years back was a classic example of this. Council final decision was not to make one. They deferred to the bus operators...which isn't a terrible policy however you have to actually be willing to back the bus operators, whatever decision they make....even the bad ones that make you cringe. Don't like that...set a policy...set a priority...set a peaking order and then the answer will follow.

Good Day.

A 6 second video twitter post from City of Ottawa on coupling two LRVs together.

https://twitter.com/twitter/statuses/969326469108334593

It might be faster and easier than I had previously thought,
but I still do not know how the couplers are stored under the nose,
nor how fast and easy it is to remove or replace the nose shroud.

We shall see.

Now let's see the uncoupling operation.

Interesting to note that the headlights on both trains turn off simultaneously after they have been coupled.

Not specific to the Citadis Spirit, but Alstom has a page about how trains are coupled.

http://3minutesstop.alstom.com/infographie/how-does-coupling-between-two-trains-work/

Quote:
Today, coupling or uncoupling is no longer carried out manually: it is directly controlled by the driver, using the control panel in the driver’s cab.
During coupling, one train approaches another at low speed to limit the effect of the “jolt”. They are then linked together by an automatic coupler, consisting of: mechanical systems to ensure the connection between the two trains, pneumatic ducts to guarantee continuity between the two trains, and finally, electrical connector heads to allow both trains to be controlled from a single cabin. To optimise aerodynamics, coupling systems are sometimes hidden away behind hatches.

I watched a small shunt (tug? mule?) pulling an LRV train though the Belfast LMSF yard on Friday evening. I assume that it was remotely operated. Kinda neat.

Not LRT, but south Florida's new HSR service, Brightline, have bike racks on each train. There is speculation that VIA Rail could be buying these same trainsets.

That is something the City of Ottawa should have got if they were smart enough. At least this way there is no conflict between passengers.

That seems like something that would work on a genteel, intercity train where there are no standing passengers and seats are reserved. That doesn't seem like a solution for a packed urban train with lots of standing passengers.

This works in LRT, as long as the hooks are right by the door, like shown a few pages back in Portland, Oregon. And I have seen this work first hand, even used the hooks for my bike in rush hour afternoon commute last summer, no issues at all, and it was crowded, and I was with my gf and my 9 month baby and a second bike with baby seat.
