Vancouver Signs $88 Million Unmanned Vehicle Order with Hyundai Rotem

Vancouver British Columbia - South Korean rolling stock manufacturer Hyundai Rotem has agreed a $88 million deal with TransLink, Metro Vancouver's transport authority in Canada, for 24 unmanned trains.

The electric vehicles will operate on the 18.5 kilometre Canada Line connecting Vancouver International Airport, Richmond, and Vancouver with speeds of up to 90 kph.

Delivery of the trains, which are to be manufactured in Changwon, South Korea, start in early 2019 and will be completed by the end of 2020.

They are expected to increase capacity on the line by 30 percent.

Hyundai Rotem has previously built 20 two-car metro vehicles for the Canada Line following a contract win in 2005.

A spokesperson said that the company is looking to increase its presence in the unmanned vehicle market with new orders.

Meanwhile TransLink has announced it will expedite the delivery of 28 Bombardier-built carriages for the Expo and Millennium lines as part of a wider $298 million investment in rolling stock.

As a result, these carriages will be available three years ahead of schedule by the end of 2019.

This is in addition to 28 Bombardier carriages, also for the Expo and Millenium lines, that will be available by early 2019.

TransLink said that the additional vehicles will help relieve rush-hour crowding at a time when transit use is reaching an all-time high in Metro Vancouver.

In 2017, ridership grew by more than 12 percent on the Expo and Millennium lines, and by more than 6 percent on the Canada Line.

Digital maps are nice to have but they are not a necessity. Trains already have scrolling tickers on board which shows the next station as well as train's terminus. While most of those things can be retrofitted onto existing rolling stock, the priority is very low because they cant afford to. I'm not talking about just money here. These kind of upgrades don't happen overnight, so trains would have to be taken out of service, affecting existing train frequencies. Considering how they run 18 out of 20 trains during peak periods, I don't see how reducing service to have these minor upgrades make any sense.

While the new trains may have these features, they definitely won't have 4 doors per car; otherwise, the chance of having platform screen doors in the future will be thrown out the window. The new trains might have an updated styling but the rest wouldn't be all that different.

Commuters would be better served by faster and more frequent trains than with flashy screens. Form follows function, people.

yup, this. you dont need half the stuff some people want here, because of the scrolling inside information bars.

but better HVAC and LED lighting should be a must-have.

Sure, and I can see the scrolling bars getting replaced with LCDs. Eventually.

Right now, TransLink's got bigger things to worry about.

Exactly. And also, there are apps out there that have maps of the transit system that you can use, in conjunction with GPS, to know where you are and where you're going and how to get there.

These small features cost pennies on top of massive orders but, improve the ridership experience. Having nice trains is not precluding us from also having better service...

Until people wonder why only eighteen trains have screens, and start demanding that TransLink do it for the whole fleet (most of which, due to demand, can't be taken out of service for a week or two). Or when they inevitably break down or get vandalized, and TransLink once again gets the blame for the "waste of taxpayer money."

Utilitarian trains work just fine for everybody right now; if we want to be jealous of other cities, let's envy their architecture and weather and intelligent city planning.
