Our seat configuration make our trains seem more crowded than other city's trains, like Calgary. It doesn't look like bikes have much room to be stored.

Here is the link again, why doesn't Ottawa do this? The hangers would go in right by the doors in the front and back of the train. Simple, easy, clean and doesn't require the removal of too many seats.

With OC Transpo's Rack & Roll the bikes don't take up any seats. Admittedly it probably wouldn't be practical with LRT to keep the bikes outside the train, but is an example.

Agreed. In that case it is more like 1 bike per seat. They could potentially have folding seats there so that someone can sit down when bikes aren't being stored (or just have people stand in that space).

As for previous arguments racks like that being too ableist, you could require the racks to be used during peak periods (when space is at a premium) but allow other options outside of peak periods.

yep, out west in Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon, they have their stuff figured out re: bikes on LRT. Is Ottawa even looking at other cities for some guidance?

I heard from someone inside OC Transpo, that they are aware of the hook / hanging method, and prefer that settup. But, when the contract for the trains were awarded they weren't even sure if they were going to let bikes on at all, so it would have been premature to include bike hangers.

Maybe in future train orders they will ask for bike hangers (and less seats / more standing space hopefully)

Very few metro-style transit systems allow bicycles on vehicles during rush hour (including such bicycle friendly places as the Netherlands). Where they do, it is usually one or two specific spots reserved for bicycles (such as Seattle or Portland) and rules that make it clear that if those spots are unavailable you cannot bring your bike on board. These spots are often shared with other potential uses such as luggage or strollers.

I am not aware of any system that has adopted Ottawa's proposed policy of allowing unlimited bicycles all the time or any system where the recommended strategy is to occupy three seats.

The proper solution would have been to leave provisions for them to be added later, not assume there will never be any bike on board.

Well, it would have been more meaningful if they actually pointed toward the doors, which in most cases coincides with the direction of train travel.

Their chart says there are no limits on bikes on the BART, but then when you look at the actual rules.
