cfldb.ca/2017/12/regarding-halifax-expansion

A good overview of the situation. The only issue that I have with this assessment is the $225 million stadium cost. Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton was built recently for less than $150 million, and that included extra costs associated with rushing to get the facility ready for the PanAm Games.

With these recent developments, I thought he would have been all over this topic. He hasn't visited the forum since August 5th..........

This is an interesting article on the CFL bid and the stadium discussion around it:

http://www.thechronicleherald.ca/novasco...-make-or-break-halifax%E2%80%99s-cfl-bid

It made me recall that in 1982 when there was considerable momentum for a stadium and a CFL franchise, the proposed location was the northern end of what is now Highfield Park, near the Circumferential Highway. Imagine how different that area would have been developed if that had happened.

It concerns me to see LeBlanc quoted saying they haven't figured out the capital structure or ownership of a stadium yet. The stadium should be the first priority. No stadium deal makes any other work moot.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/jan/10/everton
The Liverpool mayor, Joe Anderson, has defended the city council’s decision to lend Everton £280m to help build a stadium at Bramley Moore dock, arguing that the arrangement fits in with an existing invest-to-earn strategy and will actually make money for the region over the next 25 years.
“There is no risk to the city or the council from what we are doing,” the Labour mayor told the Liverpool Echo. “We are trying to bring in more revenue, and this should make a profit of nearly £200m over the next 25 years.
It is estimated the city council could make £7m-a-year profit from interest charged on a loan of £280m over 25 years, plus extra revenue from business rates and related developments once the stadium is up and running.

This is the same idea as the LeBlanc plan for a CFL franchise and the same argument used by Ottawa council.

Wasted my time watching the interview and it was just 7 minutes of waffle. Must think taxpayers are mugs. Snake oil salesmen with better apparel.
They don't have $150-200 million and no bank will lend any money without solid investor and government guarantees. Premier McNeil won't touch this with a barge pole as long as he doesn't have money for family doctors.

That's because it's a generic render for a mixed Soccer / Football stadium.
Here's a San Diego MLS / SDSU Football Proposal

Looks familiar, no?

Well that seems hokey... just throw out some generic eye-candy to get the locals excited...

Pretty much.

That said, a mixed use stadium makes sense in the long run, I wouldn't mind (probably prefer) a hybrid soccer/football stadium. Beyond the financial and functional practicality, a 3 or 4 sided stadium just looks better.

If anyone has followed Leblac's involvement with the Coyotes franchise and paid attention to his words and true intentions, then he would be the last person you'd want involved in a project in your city. He's a con-man and an incompetent idiot.

Unfortunately, there's never a shortage of stupid gullible people out there in the world that will believe people like him.

Or American NFL wannabees or TFC soccer trolls to invade CFL forums.

Rumours of CFL franchise announcement nixed
BILL SPURR The Chronicle Herald February 16, 2018

The leader of a group that hopes to bring the CFL to Halifax was succinct on Friday when asked if it’s true the league will award a franchise next Friday.

“No.”

Based on “anonymous sources,” a Halifax radio station reported on Friday a stadium would be located at Dartmouth Crossing, with construction to begin in September. It also said Halifax would be home to a Grey Cup within three years of the still-hypothetical team beginning play, and that the province had agreed to build a connector road between Highway 102 and Highway 118.

Anthony LeBlanc, leader of the Maritime Football Ltd. ownership group, had just two minutes to speak between meetings on Friday afternoon, and needed less time than that to throw cold water on the rumour.

LeBlanc confirmed he and CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie will be in Halifax next week, but cautioned not to read too much into that.

“We plan to listen to his vision, and he wants to hear what people have to say in the region, but we don’t anticipate any form of announcement at that event,” LeBlanc said.

“It is fair to say, and we’ve been pretty public, that we are in ongoing discussions with the league and with a number of landowners in the region. At this time we certainly have not collected a site, we have not negotiated final terms with the league.”

LeBlanc, a longtime executive with Research in Motion and the former president and chief executive of the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes, was even more dismissive of the notion that a new highway has been promised to his group.

“I don’t even know what that is referring to,” he said. “We are looking at a number of locations right now, so to say it’s one particular one would simply not be accurate.”

Marla MacInnis, a spokeswoman with Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, said the department “has not been engaged in any discussions with regard to road infrastructure to support any potential new stadium project.”

And, as for conjecture about a potential Grey Cup for Halifax, LeBlanc said that is a matter for the CFL’s board of governors.

“And the idea that they would be awarding that at this point is just not possible.”
