Stunning building, but of course we can't stand for such things here. Too tall, too bright, too blue etc etc.

Now back to our table top, boring, seafoam green 35 story residential buildings that all look alike

too tall for Vancouver? hmm

Strangely, I don't think a supertall within the height range of the ones posted above - Seoul or Denver - would go well in Vancouver. Yes the v'cones push and dumb down, but at present, a max of 700ft. Also, Vancouver has a rather conservative skyline, not only in height, but in style as well, with the VAG and plaza, and the likes of Cathedral Place, The Georgia, The discipline and symmetry of Howa and Burrard Streets, Robson Square and the sun and sky it lets in; downtown Vancouver is npot as tall, but generally a lot "tonier" than for example, Calgary.
700 foot max at Burrard and Georgia, and I think the building there (with its accompanying 550 ft property neighbour) will be grand for the city, but I'd like to see street level classic elegance and then maybe a curving or angular shard of glass (try nickel-plating) soaring above.

Westbank/BIG development in Toronto

Hi all,

Thought I'd bring this up again as Westbank and BIG are doing an outstanding job with this project. As much as I'll love having this built here in Toronto, it boggles my mind that Vancouver doesn't have anything quite like it in the works (unless I've missed something?). The vegetation, peaks, scale, material choice and public realm considerations just scream Vancouver to me. In fact, the latest development application describes the project as "a little fragment of Vancouver". They even have a Meat & Bread in the rendering (TO currently has 0 Meat & Breads)!! I mentioned in my first post that I thought this project could serve as inspiration for the Canada Post redevelopment. While I'm glad that was reworked to have terraces, I feel like they could take more detailed cues from this project.

I was just this moment thinking exactly the same thing!!! Toronto has no masochistic hangups about going "all-out" when it does things!! It just goes for it !!

^ Looks a lot like Habitat 67, but in an urban setting.

Honestly, I'm not a fan of it and I'd steer clear, too, out of concern for the high likelihood of leaks and complicated (expensive) repairs.

Yeah, whenever I see lots of corners I think of leaks.
Wondering about Vancouver House for that reason - so many seams and joints.

Ah, right. I forgot that was a thing. Hopefully designing for all that vegetation means they've thought long and hard about watertightness and drainage...

Now I'm wondering how some of these newer developments will fare with all that coastal moisture. I've noticed a lot more corner-heavy (Vancouver House, Jenga tower, 1810 Alberni, etc) and wood-heavy (Kengo Kuma tower, Terrace House, new VAG) developments being proposed. Would these fair any better in the long run you think? Also, does anybody know if green rooftops/terraces are causing any leakage in other developments in the city?

That is indeed an cool library design!! Too bad we're not in the market for a new library, as not too long ago, an impressive one was built in Vancouver, inspired by the Roman Coliseum.

this is a proposal for Portland. This trend of two towers connected with a bridge or something seems to be the thing right now. I wonder if Vancouver will jump on the trend.

^Hey, some interesting designs here!! I personally like the one for Portland, though I'm sure it would be too tall to go through in Vancouver.

Maybe it'll be built in Burnaby...

I like them but I don't want to see what the region has been doing with the trends - jumping in and building way too many before jumping to the next trend, repeat all over again.

296 and 207 meters.

Vancouver will officially be the shortest major city in the PNW, and only taller than San Diego along the west coast.

Seattle is constructing its first super tall, and San Francisco is also building a couple super talls I believe.

But it is time again to hear why the view cones aren’t limiting the heights
