Don't want to get into city v city, but the Pittsburgh Forum has a lot of good stuff on the first page and I'd encourage others to follow Pittsburgh development as well - we're in the same state and anchor the PA economy together, so their success is ours too. The new Rundown was started recently so it's pretty up to date. Pittsburgh is definitely doing well for a city its size.

I appreciate the flattery ePlanningPhila but I hate to burst your bubble; A huge percentage of completed projects in Pittsburgh end up with very mediocre building materials with disappointing results. This is a national problem more than a difference between cities.

At least, we're often the victims of the same frustration here in France.

However, it certainly can be explained by the stricter environmental regulations, that mean requirements for better insulation in particular.
Assuming the entire related industry is currently in a transition, which is always an uncomfortable situation. Their materials should eventually grow both more affordable and more aesthetic once they're more experienced in designing efficient claddings to meet today's requirements more easily.

That's great! I would doubt that includes police overtime and the like. But I'm sure they still spent a pretty penny.

I agree that the quality of the 3 buildings completed in Pittsburgh in the past decade are as a whole better than the 50 buildings completed in Philadelphia in the past decade.

I wouldn't. The Residences at the Ritz, Comcast II, Cira Centre South, and the Alexander are all better looking and more integrated into the community than anything comparable in Pittsburgh.

I agree that Pitt has better quality control but to just say a blanket statement like that is really myopic and, quite honestly, not very well thought out.

Wow you are dense, that was a Pittsburgh dis. 3 buildings in Pittsburg vs 50 in Philly, get it? I also think Philly's major projects have been very good, with some relatively crappy mid rise thrown in.

However, I actually do like Pittsburgh quite a lot because I am a wholistic Pennsylvania supporter. I just had to point out the absurdity of the comparison. I think in order to compare the two cities their scale of development needs to be in the same ballpark...and its not.

The quality of highrises may not on average be all that great today here, but I find they are visually less monolithic than 10,20 years ago, as well as they generally meet the streets in a meaningful way (which is really what counts) better than before. I imagine this is due to the increased profitability in the area as opposed to designers having some sort of epiphany.

Also, if you go into the BCF at Philadelphia Fashion District and go downstairs you can see some finished interior of the inside common areas of the mall. White subway tile etc, looks pretty chic.

Not sure whether it's serious or a pipedream. But this is the kind of thing we need at the Disney Hole, with maybe one of the towers being commercial instead of residential. The only missing ingredients are anchor tenants and demand...

Despite the sheer amount of development and construction underway just down the street, the large parking lot at 8th and Market will remain that way—for now.

Philadelphia Business Journal reports that the parking lot’s owner Goldenberg Group hopes to develop the site into something more, but not for another three years.

On July 25, the Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA) granted the developer’s request to receive a three-year extension on its parking lot permit, which allows for 292 parking spaces. The variance is needed because the site is zoned CMX-5, which allows for the highest and most dense development.

The extension is set to expire on January 21, 2021.

That’s when Goldenberg Group hopes a development deal will come up to turn the site into something more, with the idea that it’s one of the last remaining development sites on the Market East corridor. Goldenberg said:

"We believe the right project has to combine a fabulous retail and entertainment hub that activates the street frontage for pedestrians, with significant tower components that add vitality to the corridor and neighborhood."
By that point, both the two towers at the $600 million mixed-use development East Market and the renovation of the Gallery into the Fashion Outlets of Philadelphia across the street will have opened.

8th & Market parking lot owner tight-lipped about long-term plans [PBJ]



Nothing from nothing but this site should have been developed out back when Liberty One and Two were completed .... What a waste of time and lost revenue .

Honestly, with the rest of Market East developing nicely, I'm content to let that lot wait a little longer until market forces allow it to develop into a true mega project. It's such a big lot in such a great area, it would be a waste to develop anything else, ya know?
