above 10:58 am comparison of One Vanderbilt with ESB, is wonderfully clear . .
I made that comparison with the diagrams myself . .
but I was uneasy about them being currently up to date . .
coming from you, I know what's what . .
thankyou NYguy for a definitive answer . .

Just a thought that might've been tossed around before...

Let's say we're in a parallel universe where one could just telepathically relocate skyscrapers without damaging them, the infrastructure around them or the people in them.

In context of Grand Central, would it be a good idea--both aesthetically and practically--to switch this tower's skyline placement with MetLife/PanAm?

At least the contrast with the Helmsley would be far better appreciated certainly by more than a few....

[JSsocal]

^ Quite possibly, but personally I think if the building is on park avenue's axis it should be symmetrical.

Practically however, no- panam is actually over a million square feet larger then 1 vanderbilt, making it ideal to sit atop grand central.

Love the site of a new giant going up in the middle of the city.
It's the early stages, but this is truly a skyline defining tower.

^ Excellent.

At the opposite end of the spectrum from 30 Hudson, but coming strong now...

what a terrific angle!

they are wasting no time with this tower.

its always crazy busy inside — banging, lifts and sparks flying.

great to watch.

nd up and up it goes.

so — very impressive work and management here.

[NYguy]

^ Yes it is. One of my favorite projects in the entire city...

I hardly know where to begin with this........

[artspook]

looking from above like that . . (in Feb 10th NYguy pic post)
this super-tall appears less bulky, than its much shorter
(& obviously more squat) neighbors . . so it wont be as bulky as I thought . .
aesthetically, I prefer more slender office towers . .
but tall, slender new office towers are rare . .
Big's portly 3M sq.ft. HY Spiral for example . .

[NYguy]

I feel like this should be the soundtrack watching this one rise...

I spy with my little eye...
...A dumpy little turd (hotel IIRC) in serious need of a re-clad.

I am pleased to share that I am having a solo exhibition of my construction site paintings, opening this Thursday with a reception from 6-8pm in the Kaufman Arcade at 132 West 36th Street in Manhattan. I hope you will join me, and feel free to bring friends!
The show runs through March 31st.

This painting depicts the One Vanderbilt construction site, where a huge skeletal steel structure is rising next to Grand Central Station.

I assume it will be demolished and a new tower will take its place. The Hyatt was listed as one of the potential development sites in the Midtown East rezoning.
