I like that angle. Hides the podium.

I also enjoy the prominence of the trees on the roof - they can be seen from a variety of different vantage points across town.

Would love to see the neighbouring Kingsgate mall redeveloped to have similar podium heights as the Independent, with another tower sitting on top. That would make the Kingsway/Broadway/Main street intersection seem even more urban.

Agree to disagree.

I think that podium is one of the worst things to happen in Vancouver in a long time.

Even like these?

Brisbane:

You got to love them, right?

And the coloured cladding forms straight lines, rather than jagged ones.

First one is nice. Much better than Independent.

Absolutely love the second one - everything about it.

Proportion of tower to podium, finish, set back.

Beautiful.

The difference with those Brisbane towers is the context.
There's no way the CoV will allow a modern looking podium in a heritage area.
It focusses on "blending" rather than "contrasting".
Even in downtown Vancouver, you'd be hard pressed to find a modern streamlined podium - they all revert back to rectilinear forms or angular forms. The north-side podium of the MNP Tower is the only one that comes to mind.

Cant wait until this is old news so I can stop hating myself, for hating that podium as much as I do.

Its a freaking atrocity.

3 different colours of light blue spandrel crap up top.
Random off yellow spandrel bits
4 different colours of brick.
Weird mix of how the different brick is implemented
Giant and looming over the pedestrian realm
Weird elevation change between brick facades

I have to stop.

I'd LOL, but I was near the project yesterday and was musing that it was like looking at a rack of paint colours at a paint store.
