I think we have expanded the meaning of civil rights that the word has become meaningless.

1-3, Most Hispanics don't view immigration as their number 1 issue.
5. How does this have anything to do with civil rights? If we don't admit a Hispanic majority location as a state we are racist? In any case, hasn't Puerto Rico voted against this?

I live in one of the diverse areas of the country that has a rather large Hispanic population. Trust me, they do care about immigration and they view the unfair immigration process, targeting by ICE, and deportations as ripping apart their families and communities. It also fuels fear in those communities about going to the police for crime bc they fear deportation which just makes things worse on these communities.

As for #5, PR pays taxes because they are "American citizens" and yet it doesn't get representation in congress and has laws enforced on it that only allow businesses to buy American products. And additionally, they were treated like second class citizens this year with how the government, FEMA, and Trump handled the response (and public relations) to their crisis. So in short, they are being taxed as citizens and not getting all the benefits of statehood which is why it voted to become the 51st state.

As for the "civil rights" part of your comment, let's let the government come into your community -- tax you, deport your friends and family members, deny you access to quality education, lock you up at a disproportional rate, hold stiff penalties for issue that affect your community in order to get felonies on your record so that you can't vote, allow for racial profiling by police, pass laws that restrict your ability to get IDs that allow you fly to get on planes, etc etc etc -- when your community gets impacted by that, you can talk about how "civil rights" have become meaningless. But who are you to judge other people, their issues, their struggles, etc like its not a real thing.

I'll bet Jeff Bezos is reading this whole conversation and saying "Good point, good point, I hadn't thought of this, hmmmmm, I'll have to rethink this whole thing now."

Part of me thinks it would be really funny if The Amazon had taken out a Super Bowl ad to announce that either Philly or Boston had been chosen.

Very Edina Monsoon. PR, sweetie, PR.

Puerto Rico hasn't made an unequivocal request for statehood and that's much of the problem. After 3 votes on the issue, "status quo" has pretty much won each time. It will be interesting to see how the politics plays out after the current devestation and what the islanders no doubt see as an underwhelming federal response (even though that response is pretty much what happens everywhere in our federal system that has a high bar for federal intervention in what's mostly seen as state--or territorial--matters).

My guess is this strengthens the independence side.

Well now, let's see if Philly gets HQ2.

Or maybe Amazon will give it to Boston just to spite the winning team!

Washington DC is in the same situation. And I think the media has painted the "government hasn't done enough" narrative more so than what is actually happening on the ground. For example, anecdotally, my cousin and brother-inlaw, both from a town of around 70k in Arkansas spent the last three months in PR doing line work down there. We are doing a lot, it might just not be enough, as always.

Must I look up the definition of civil rights?

1. If your friend is being deported, its because they are here illegally. The same thing would happen if I was in the UK or Sudan illegally.
2. Who is getting denied access to education? Who is being denied and who is doing the denying?
3. If you are locked up without reason, let me know, that has to be the most unjust thing that could happen to a human. Otherwise, if you do the crime you do the time, yes even for crimes that are dumb, like marijuana possession(which I went to jail for 3 days back when I was 18 for this).
4. I don't even understand your next point, could you explain?
5.Who allows for racial profiling?
6. What Hispanics in this country are being denied legal IDs?!

Oh, the "your not ______ so you can't speak on this." I can speak on this. I dont have to be hispanic or here illegally to know the definition of civil rights and to know that the Left has expanded the term so much as to have no meaning anymore. It basically means " we arent getting treated exactly how we want, so you people are bad." Illegal immigrants face hardships in this country, because they are...illegal. If hispanic Americans are getting treated differently than citizens at large, we do in fact have an issue.

Super bowl victories are even more fleeting than governments. The only thing from this victory that is worth any contemplation are the post game riots.

Although we all understandably focus on Amazon's RFP and what they say they want, and what their priorities are, of course nothing in the RFP is binding on Amazon and the company. Further, although we make assumptions about what is MOST important, Amazon may well prioritize preferences in ways that are different than what many of us think to be most important.

It always struck me that it was odd for Amazon to put all if its eggs in a single HQ2 basket: if it actually built out to its 50,000 employee target it would effectively recreate in a second city the same challenges it finds in Seattle that drove it to look for a 2nd HQ in the first place!

I'm sure they realize that and, although they could fully forge ahead with their single city HQ2 paradigm, a different outcome wouldn't surprise me. The could come back and say that, after looking at all the proposals from "SOOO MANY AMAZING CITIES" [grin] and and after taking a fresh look at their needs and plans in light of the available options, they've decided to split this initiative into 2 or 3 pieces, dividing their HQ2 initiative between multiple cities. To me, in terms of future cost structures and maximum leverage for future expansions and luring top talent, that would make more sense anyways.

When my company did a search for a new office, we did the same process by floating the RFP, analyzing the cities, met with city officials, etc. Internally, the Project Manager for the office opening got collected the stakeholders feedback and weighted the categories in the RFP and then created a number ranking. After that, the list of 30 cities quickly shrank to a 5.

On that list, the top 3 were Kansas City, San Antonio, and San Francisco (in that order). The company had reservations about San Fran because of cost of living. The Execs at the company vetoed Kansas City because they said it wasn't a place that would entice employees to relocate there and that they believed the "Millennial appeal" over it was overstated, plus, the Execs didn't want to spend time in that city. San Antonio became the front runner even though it was a distant second to Kansas City by the analysis because the opinions of the Execs is what mattered -- its all about internal politics, whose budget is funding the move, who are the most influential voices, etc.

When looking to add this office, the topic of multiple offices came up. It didn't make sense. To staff up for a new operation, we needed to be in a place with a lot of universities to quickly build out a recruiting operation. Spreading that over multiple regions, would be extremely difficult. Not saying it couldn't happen with Amazon, but my take is that if they've said they are doing a true HQ2, they probably mean it as such...otherwise, the selection criteria would have been vastly different.

Most of the time when companies open up a 2nd HQ, it's usually done to segregate between business lines. Examples, many large banks have their Investment Banking HQs in NYC but their Commercial Banking HQ in another city like Charlotte, Atlanta, etc. Strategically, Amazon's HQ2 is probably going to be a different business line than the traditional Amazon we are familiar with today -- that would be my bet. But who knows!

The Eagles will win the Super Bowl before Amazon chooses Philly for HQ2.

Not necessarily.

1. It might be more about Seattle not being able to handle 20,000,000 sf and 120,000 workers. Not our difficulty with the first 12,000,000 and (soon) 70,000.

2. A larger city could handle growth more easily. Or one with more free land. Seattle is getting tight for anyone wanting 8,000,000 sf.

3. Other cities will support Amazon and even give them tax breaks etc. Seattle does the opposite -- they pay millions in added fees to build major buildings.
