yes, some were from that plan, others were from railways. Cambie was from the plan, 100%, but King Edward used to have a railway down it at one point as well for some parts.

here is a photo of Granville and King Ed showing train tracks going E/W through the intersection even though the map above only shows the transit service going East of Granville.

(on a side note, you can see the very strange, old shchool stop sign in the middle of the road poking up with what i assume is a red flashing light in the middle)

i have read that a rail line ran down Valley Drive and onto 16th Ave. i can't find where i read this but it goes way way way back when it was a logging rail-line. from what i remember, this rail line closed and was removed at the turn of the century. (this came from 1 source and who knows how accurate it is.

)

it will be sad when the median on King Edward is narrowed.

if only it could be a heritage boulevard like Cambie is.

Spent a lot of time in the forest(s) around Burnaby Lake/Brunette, you can still spot the old ROW & make out the old communities that built around the line amidst all the overgrowth.

I'm guessing there's little trace of this ROW in Vancouver, save for the 1st ave median

There's a few clues, houses built on the old ROW are newer than their neighbours, c. 1950s vs. c. 1910s.

Probably because the Expo follows an old train route... which was apparently still being used at the time of construction.

I'm more interested in the fact that whoever did the caption doesn't know how to spell "excavator..."

I love how from that angle the station seems to be the tallest structure for blocks around with nothing else. It just looks so odd compared to how built up the area is now.

This Buzzer Blog post has some old pictures including one of Metrotown Station before the mall was built (it's a large image).

Why don't they just extend the Montreal Metro?

That one is a P3 with automated trains. A separate branched line.

The Montreal Metro is a rubber tyred metro and the trains actually can't run above ground or uncovered as a result of this (IIRC it has something to do with tires gripping the rails when wet or something). The new system is steel wheeled so it's okay to go outside, and will run at-grade, above grade and occasionally below grade (like when going underneath Mont Royal).

There are several RTM's that can operate at or above grade. It just 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 🞵🞵🞵 during snowy and icy conditions, which I'm sure with some engineering, they can easily deice it.

The current trains aren't weather proof.

I have a bit of envy of this project, simply because it seemed to come out of nowhere and progressed to this point (and will be in operation relatively) so quickly compared to what has been planned and been sitting stalled in Metro Vancouver for such a long time.

Let's get on with building Broadway (to UBC, and Surrey/Langley) already!
