I know I'm late but THE EAGLES WON THE SUPER BOWL!!!

Such a fantastic win for the city, and one of the greatest underdog sport stories in recent years.

I’m surprised you haven’t requested a name change to EaglesFan.
Lots of new fans have joined the Eagles universe!

Are championship parades usually profitable to the city hosting them? I know with the draft Philadelphia made money for playing host but I believe a good portion of its costs were covered by the nfl.

Hotels, local shops selling overpriced Eagles gear, restaurants, various food vendors, etc. all benefit.

The city collection of all of those related tax revenue certainly helps.

I've been wondering the same thing myself. The Eagles hosted the NFC championship, which brought a lot of people into the city...then the Super Bowl obviously did the same and the parade will do the same again. What kind of net gain does the city/region see (SEPTA, Hotels, Shops, Restaurants, Bars, etc.) vs. the tax money spent on policing the whole thing?

I know the estimated economic impact from the divisional game and the NFC title game was around $96 million. I would imagine the parade would be somewhere north of $20 or $30 million. They were talking about that last night somewhat on 6ABC; hotels are filling up and restaurants/bars will be especially busy.

The massive crowds in the city = massive tax revenue + massive hotel, food, transportation (minus the free subway service (curtesy of SEPTA)), etc. will benefit the city and participating businesses.

Advertisers love this event just as much!!
Sales of Coca~Cola, Pepsi, etc. also benefit tremendously.
Don’t forget the city’s imposed “soda-tax” revenue.

Free subway service courtesy of Independence Blue Cross; they sponsored that.

As a reminder, don't feed trolls, guys. He's been warned and told he's unwelcome in the Philly threads after egregious behavior like that.

Hey, I rarely post but read very often, but I had to say, after being at the parade today, anyone who came or watched who is unfamiliar with Center City will have to be impressed with how different the city looks vs. the stereotype of Philly. The weather was perfect to show off the city, cranes and construction were unignorable (is that a word) and the crowds made it all look like something out of a movie. This wasn't a parade, it was a coming out party.

I am skeptical the city made any money off of this and more likely, they lost money. Police overtime and trash cleanup (also requires overtime) are extremely costly. Regardless, this was a celebration, not a money making event. Though I'm curious if the Eagles pitched in to help with costs?

Does the Eagle organization pay taxes to the city? Players pay city wage tax, etc. Notice State police was there too.

If so, I say the parade is a good return for the organization and players.

I guess you could look at the overall economic picture as well...more people working means more private income, which theoretically means more spending, which leads to more tax revenue down the line. I'm sure there is a way to measure this if you look at tax revenue over the next couple of months.

In the end, you're right...it's not about making money. Still interesting to think about though.

So I am a Philadelphian but I am also a big fan of Pittsburgh. Truly a fantastic city. And I recently visited their development page. AND WOW. Not only the scale of projects going on in Pittsburgh now is truly impressive for a city its size (300k city 2.3M MSA) but the quality of the design and architecture is TOTALLY BEASTING Philadelphia. I mean the quality of their design and architecture is just truly impressive.

Here is a link to their thread. I encourage you all to take a look. It would be nice if we could match this here in Philadelphia. I will say only about 1/2 of our new notable construction has been of worthy design. Even the Jewler's Row tower is an UTTER joke.

I feel like you are the same guy who just tried to say the Pittsburgh area had more big companies. Its a nice development rundown, but the best projects in that thread you linked are just condo proposals (we can show you tons of renderings of fancy proposals all over philly just like those).

Maybe you should take a look around our city more often at somethings built recently.

Not to make it a city v. city, but the proper comparison is things that are BUILT, not just proposed, here and in Pittsburgh. In both cities -- as well as most other cities -- proposals are often value-engineered, watered down, weakened, or abandoned. Irrespective of any comparison to Pittsburgh, I do agree that most of Philly's new residential construction has been mediocre. There are exceptions like The Bridge and the Alexander.

I AM A HUGE PHILADELPHIA ADVOCATE. There is nothing wrong with demanding BETTER design for our built environment here in Philadelphia. I mean the Toll Brothers jewelers row project is mediocre at best, and that is throwing some very nice words its way.

I think the mindset Pittsburgh v. Philadelphia is EXTREMELY outdated. It should be. Hey we are One Pennsylvania what can we learn from each other. And I have to say Pittsburgh is killing us on our built environment right now, and it would be great to learn some things, so we can come back better.

I mean I live right around the corner from the Lincoln Square project on Broad and Washington, and the facade is GARBAGE. It looks like suburban TRASH, yet here it is getting built on a prominent corner in Philadelphia.

Where as look at this quality of design. Full line urban Target (not this small city target) with a nicely modern residential building with cohesive street design, in a prominent corridor.
https://www.google.com/maps/@40.4602326,...EXntBcQchgijWSRPsGtRQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

This is not city v. city. This is just about saying. Lets increase the quality of our design here in Philadelphia. Any guesses why it has been below par for a city of our caliber?

IMO, your claim would have a bit more credibility if you could refer to "several" completed (Pittsburgh) projects, within say that last 5 years (or so), where "Pittsburgh is killing us on our built environment". I think we all would like to understand/debate your criticism from an architectural viewpoint, not from a city versus city view.
