I'm saying I'm glad the newest design has more space for the "development" half of the district, and that the "park" half is now a plaza and garden rather than just a giant soccer field. That's enjoyable for a lot more than just dogwalkers, picnickers and geese.

Ah, yeah. I definitely feel that sentiment. A big grass void in the middle of a city is pretty lame.

i remember back when they were taking submissions; this one was my favourite by far. some tweaks could be made, but it is still my favourite.

I agree, if you had to pick one, a longer shallower linear park with buildings along the northern street edge and more southern water exposure for the general public is vastly better then the current proposal. Mind you I'd still prefer to keep the viaducts and put the buildings along the north edge.

I didn't notice any opportunities for cultural congregation.

I watched a good chunk of the fly-through - it looks lovely - but I wonder what happens to that neighbourhood after the sun sets, if there is nothing to do but just watch the sun set and go to restaurants. A few venues, meeting spaces, bar/club/lounges, live comedy or music, even an arthouse theatre or cinema would add a lot of evening animation, keep the streets safer, and not make the place a ghost-town commuter village.

I really hope there are places designed in the plan for groups of people to meet and share a common experience, inside.

Plaza of Nations next door may have some venues.
I would expect that the retail commercial around NEFC would serve stadium and arena crowds but could be as dead as Granville Island at other times.

Arguably though, isn't this a Vancouver wide problem?

Beyond good eats and Canucks, were not exactly a culture capital.

And anytime a music venue stays open afterhours noise complaints are in no short order.

All that being said - I'm definitely not opposed to creating more cultural spaces for people to enjoy.

Aren't Science World, the stadiums and the casino just next door? This area would make people come earlier before or stay late after games/concerts to hang out and chill in the neighbourhood. The markets and shops will be used by people living around there, considering how traffic would be atrocious after Vision tear down the viaducts, I don't think many residents will want to drive around too much.

to be fair, there is a large underground circle of "culture" and a lot of stuff is word of mouth. They in the scene prefer it that way apparently. I know a few artists and some of the things they have told me that go on I have never heard of going on. Art shows, performance etc. They don't like the mainstream art scene or having to get corporations involved. Plus we have mountains.

It would be good to have movie theatres and clubs/lounges and other retail - not necessarily "cultural" buildings, just places to have fun that don't involve dining or drinking. Entertainment districts are supposed to have, well, entertainment.

Plus viewcones to protect their views, even on rainy days and night time. Good 'nuf!

Actually it would be nice to have a upper floor restaurant or lounge on top of one of the taller towers in this neighbourhood. The view of the city and water would be spectacular.

You mean those very same corporations that make it possible for truly "world class" cultural facilities and performances in almost every FREAKING other city on the planet?

Fine then, let those edgy underground "artists" starve on the fringe, or surely they can sustain themselves on pretense alone.

Often it's not necessarily about a distain for corporations (although those attitudes are there, and not always misplaced) but an unwillingness to deal with everything that comes with City- or corporate-sanctioned spaces. This is maybe the biggest lesson that the City needs to understand whenever it tries to create "artist" or "cultural" spaces: for the most part, artists want to create art, not deal with liquor licenses and noise restrictions and permits and applications. They don't have time and they certainly don't have the money.

It's a two-way street as well, especially on the corporate side of things: if you're in the business of making lots of money, you aren't out there supporting underground acts with niche appeal. Even if people in the underground arts scene wanted corporate support (and some do!), it just isn't always there.

The way most cities get around this divide is by having their cultural scene supported and enabled by small businesses and organizations- club owners, privately operated theatres, arts groups, and so on. They take care of the paperwork stuff and give artists a space to do their thing. That's how it works here, too- except those small businesses are typically very marginal when it comes to finances and the astronomical rent/land costs here have driven most of them out and forced others to move to lower-risk programming (DJs instead of live music, sports on TV instead of comedy, etc.). Anything else either goes away or gets pushed into the underground. Figure out how to fix that and you'll be doing a whole lot more good than by bemoaning "pretense".

well one event I was told about wouldn't be mainstream at all. The guy I know is an artist and he was asked to sketch at a "performance" and he said there were a lot of people there. It was part of a larger event, it was at the straight bathhouse on hastings street, and he and others were there to sketch or just watch some couples having 🞵🞵🞵, he thought it was kinda weird. But its part of the underground scene that is not really widely known. And there were like comedy shows, gallery shows etc. But AFAIK were never published in coming events type pages, was more of a if you know and are in the art scene you would know.

Ok yeah that's definitely going to stay in the underground haha. My experience comes more from working with the local live music scene...lots of people getting frustrated at seeing more and more lip service from the city about supporting "the arts" while also seeing fewer and fewer venues for shows and less ability to promote them. Those "coming events" listings are harder to get listed in than people think; they tend to be pretty selective and you have to happen to know the right people. But that's a whole other topic.
