'Rathole,' tunnel or skyway? Council set to debate tricky west LRT options

City officials are finalizing plans for the west LRT line and struggling with how to avoid snarling traffic at 149 Street.

One option could make a new “rathole” — sending north-south traffic under an LRT track at grade.

Another fix — putting the track on stilts as it follows Stony Plain Road — could force officials to expropriate local businesses and create an unfriendly concrete monolith for an eight-block stretch of the commercial district.

After a full design review for the 14-km west leg of the Valley Line LRT, city officials are poised to send three options to council. The third and most expensive option is tunnelling along Stony Plain Road.

I say Skyway......To me this is the sweet spot for this project. Tunneling to expensive. And leaving it at grade is Madness.

Just the new surrey line will likely be LRT not Skytrain.

Foolish decision IMO but the City of Surrey is pushing LRT hard.

The second camera hasn't been working since Dec 21 and shows the Deerfoot and WID Canal bridge construction. First will show Bow River Bridge construction. Looks like warm January outside work.

We've had a lot of issues in Ottawa since construction started on the Confederation Line. A huge sinkhole near the tunnel portal, a massive sinkhole on Rideau Street, flooding (caused by the Rideau Street sinkhole), a lot of safety related labour issues, quite a few deadlines that haven't been met, and now the base of a centenary pole that caught fire (likely electrical).

Have any other cities experienced this much disruption while constructing a rapid transit line, be it subway, skytrain, light rail... over the past 65 years?

All they did is go to Portland and only listen to supporters, ignored everything and everyone else, including cost differentials and traffic accidents.

Edmonton ETS transit ridership per capita is actually higher than Calgary Transit. But it doesn't serve the whole CMA like Calgary Transit, so maybe not a fair comparison. And even though overall ridership is higher in Edmonton, the LRT ridership is much lower. Edmonton's system is very reliant on buses. Maybe that's why the cost-recovery ratio of ETS is lower. If the LRT ridership was higher, maybe ETS would be more efficient.

Is that a single lane one-way? Man, those drivers will have terrible visibility. They'll have to encroach the cross-walk all the time to see what's going on. Get ready for heck load of accidents.

There's nothing obstructing the view of the crosswalk for like 5m back. Shouldn't be any problem with visibility.

Montreal's budget has been approved and includes the budget for the project office of the pink line (REM or metro TBD). The business case will then be forwarded to the ARTM for prioritization.

I'd say none since the mayor wants it compatible with the REM as it will go outdoors plus she wants to have it funded through the infrastructure bank.

Thank god there's none of this LRT nonsense in Montreal though.

But it will probably still be considered a line on the Metro system. It won't be what Montrealers are used to (rubber tired, fully underground subway), but still par of the Metro.
