Yep Edmonton's skyline is going through the most dramatic change in the country currently. Reminds me of when the Shangri-la was built in Vancouver and the table top skyline was finally breached. Exciting times.

I hate to brag, but YEG has a looooong skyline for a city of 1MM. Most photos of Edmonton show city center, not the stretched out skyline expanding in Oliver (the district to the right). It's crazy how far west the skyline stretches along the valley.

Let there be no doubt: Edmonton's skyline is quickly becoming one of the most impressive. Soon to be just as impressive as Calgary's. I would even argue that soon it will be more impressive than Calgary's.

Calgary's skyline is very compact (small footprint)....Edmonton is like it's been said is really spread out! Really nice.

I think the perspective is what makes Edmonton's skyline look longer - Calgary's downtown core stretches almost 3km in length which is comparable to the length of the skyline in the Edmonton picture above. The problem is that there really isn't a good vantage point at any sort of similar distance that one can take a similar picture of Calgary's core because the core is in a valley plus the number of hilly areas just outside of the core that obscure any great vistas.

That picture of Edmonton looks to be taken from somewhere on or near the NAIT campus - about 2.35km as the crow flies. Any spot that's 2.35km from Calgary's downtown core is going to have multiple natural obstructions in the way and especially so if taken from the north of south side of the core.

Now I suppose some people might say Crescent Road is a great vantage point (to the north of the core) but Crescent Road is less than 500 meters from the core so the perspective is quite different.

Calgary has a better skyline than Edmonton in the same way that Chicago has a better skyline than Toronto.

Toronto might post big numbers, and have a very long linear skyline, and it might also have a really tall building and some new tall ones in the pipeline, but Chicago still has many more landmark buildings of significant height.

Edmonton might be getting Stantec, but Manulife would be a minor highrise in the Calgary skyline, that isn't really in the same leagues as the Bow, Telus Sky, Brookfield or earlier stuff like Bankers Hall or Suncor, similar to how Scotia Plaza and FCP aren't exactly in the same leagues as the Sears tower or Hancock.

Even though I reside in Calgary and am partial to said city's skyline, there just is not a vantage point at a similar distance as the Edmonton picture that one could take a picture of Calgary's downtown with the same perspective. Apples to apples, it just can't be done.

Concur in full. Calgary has girth and height.

Edmonton is certainly changing, but we really need another 5-10 significant towers in about a 3-4 block radius, thankfully those are coming

1. Tower B - Ice District - 45 floors/150m - U/C
2. BMO tower - 45-50floors/150-175m est. - proposed
3. Encore - 43 floors/150m - U/C
4. Edgar 106 - 40?/150m - proposed
5. Langham 104st/100ave - 30 & 40 floors - proposed
6. Westrich 106st - 40-45 floors - proposed
7. Healy lands - 42, 46, 48 floors - proposed

If we can have 2/3 of those move forward, we will fill some key holes and create a much more complete Downtown in terms of density.

Flattering angle of the Spring Garden Road area in Halifax. 4 new highrises are in various stages of development along the row that fronts onto the park. It'll look a bit more like the periphery of the Boston Common in the future. The population density of the neighbourhood will also be quite high.

Because of planning rules aimed at reducing shadows on public spaces, the highrises to the south of the park (not all visible; the apartment building set at 45 degrees is one example) are set far back from the street. The shadow concerns make sense but the setbacks were implemented in "tower-in-the-park" style when there should have been at least lowrise buildings built up to the street.

Fun fact: that building on the right has a twin in Edmonton. You can also see the Victoria General and Bethune Building in the background. The Bethune Building is one of the few pre-WWII highrise buildings in the city.

Another story about Victoria Park. The William Alexander monument at the southern end (left; not the human-shaped statue) commemorates the earl and his early 1600's settlement scheme that resulted in the colony being called Nova Scotia. It is built out of stones from Menstrie Castle, the place where he lived in Scotland. The monument is a scaled back version of the original proposal to ship the whole (admittedly small) castle over in the 1950's.
