I guess this article is trying to say “Be careful what you wish for” but I think the issues they bring up are pretty specific to Seattle and would not necessarily happen in the HQ2 finalist cities. Not to say there wouldn't be other issues they cause, but if they pick a larger city than Seattle (Chicago, NY, Philly, DC, Boston...) they probably wouldn't be as pervasive as they are in HQ1.

Your whole analysis puts more of a negative spin on Detroit's city proper decline compared to Pitt's but the truth is Detroit sits on much more regional wealth, amenities (besides transit) and workforce resources than Pittsburgh ever will. Pittsburgh is more centralized with it's universities, so the numbers are a bit softer but that's about it.

I don't see Pittsburgh's ability to draw talent being much different, in Detroit, there would be limitless family-friendly options in the suburbs for the types that wanted that sort of thing and the urban techies would have multiple neighborhoods around the core to choose from. Educated millennials aren't really raving about Pittsburgh the way homers on here want everybody to believe, I would know since I am one but also the numbers prove that Pittsburgh's regional college retention rate is one of the lowest, about 50%.
You're the biggest homer in a site full of them. Anecdotally, I know two people from small town Arkansas who moved to Pittsburgh and love it. My wife has mentioned the city multiple times. Never have we even thought about the distant maybe possibility of relocating to Detroit nor do we know anyone that has moved or talked about moving there.

Comparing a company's market cap to a country's economic output is epic Apples and Oranges. AAPL is nearly a 16th of our market cap at nearly $1 trillion. All this means is the stock market has a lot of faith in the growth and economic potential of these companies.

great stock to get too.
Considering how much of the GNP of France is for sale on Amazon, why are you surprised? I just wish I could get same-day delivery of baguettes that would still be fresh (and preferably warm).

That’s one of my concerns. If anything were to happen to Apple (major flop in iPhone sales for example) it could be a catalyst for a substantial correction in the markets considering all of the mutual funds and ETFs that hold Apple and their relations with other sectors.

Apples to apples would be Amazon's market cap vs the value of all assets in France (properties, businesses).

No, that article is predicting that Amazon will reach a $1 trillion market cap. Amazon's current market cap is $624 billion.

I am the last person on this forum that you want to challenge on that sort of thing.

I presume you are familiar with Tartine Bakery?

I'm not sure if they do baguettes and not just sourdough loaves, but they do deliver in the city. Our SF office has them cater meetings sometimes.

no, predicting and closing in on is saying the exact same thing.

its nonsense anyway because obviously it was just flip as a company’s market cap and a country’s gnp are completely different.

but yes since you did not even realize anything as simple as all that you are right, you are indeed the last person to be challenged or to be challenging anyone on that sort of thing.

Seriously folks, this is all one huge dog and pony show, and it seems everyone's fallen for it. Don't you realize how utterly ridiculous this whole thing really is? Amazon's simply trolling for tax dollars. Nothing more, nothing less. They've already made their decision, this whole troll everyone thing is nothing but a sick game.

And frankly, it's pathetic. It's pathetic for them, just as it's pathetic for the so-called leader of the free world to do so.

Well yeah, that's not exactly some big secret. This is how the US works. We all have to compete to see who can take the most tax money from working class people and give it to the richest man in the world!

ha yeah absolutely. this what is done all the time. its just such a large get this time. i agree the choice has most likely long been made, but it could change with enough giveaways. its no reason for the finalists to not keep trying and sweetening the pot.
