The hotel is only in the podium - it's a very small hotel.

Yah it's 112 rooms so not on the massive size, but that doesn't really mean anything in the grand scheme of things. It's not downtown Vancouver and there are several hotels that are prominent downtown that are near the same size. Living Shangri-la is only 119 rooms. Rosewood Georgia Hotel is about 156 rooms so larger but not hugely so. 3 Civic also is 165 rooms so again not hugely so.

Based on the 3 Civic footprint, if this specific hotel was built "up", it would be 15 storeys high.

That said we're not talking the Hyatt downtown which has 644 rooms or the Fairmont Pacific Rim which is about 340 rooms or the.

And let's face it, even the Hyatt is small on the grand scheme of things when hotels like the Belagio (3,950 rooms) or the Hilton in Anaheim (1,572 rooms) exist...

So I guess "very small" is all relative.

For Surrey, and Surrey Central specifically, this is what I would call a respectfully sized hotel.

Exactly. Granted comparing a hotel pretty much anywhere to something in Las Vegas is a bit silly I will admit, but it still illustrates the point that saying "very small" is really a relative statement. I prefer to stick with evaluating projects based on where they are located not comparing it to a city, even not hugely far away, that has a different use case or situation.

No different than all the people in transport threads comparing Vancouver to Portland (street cars, LRT), or Vancouver to Copenhagen (bikes). I always find it just a little bit ridiculous and I've yet to read a business case that concludes to do something entirely because "someone else is doing it lawlz."

Back closer to topic, I wonder what their business case is. Is it specifically for anticipated commercial development around King George SkyTrain or are they also looking to cater to longer stay relatives and such with family at Surrey Memorial hospital. The Hotel isn't right in the core so it makes me wonder a bit.

Their business case is simply that there is unprecedented demand for hotel rooms in the Surrey (and Greater Vancouver) area. I occasionally try to make a booking for friends/relatives and the lack availability and prices in Surey (never mind Vancouver) is shocking. My sense is both the Marriott and the Hampton/Hilton will do well and will provide for the needs of two distinct markets and without the fear of cannibalizing each others markets.

I'm guessing Surrey Memorial Hospital families are notably on their radar. I've worked at SMH in the past and families from throughout BC would come to Surrey to be close to loved ones in care or for their own out-patient needs. The problem was that with the exception of the nearby Grouse Motel (hardly a selling feature), there wasn't much except the former Days Inn which was demolished a number of years ago for KG Hub. The newer Days Inn down the hill from Gateway is about the same distance as the Best Western near Newton and the other options (i.e. Sheraton, Sandman, etc) are mostly around Guildford. As the medical campus continues to ambitiously expand in the area, it only makes sense to have a smaller Hampton-type hotel serve the area and meet the range of suitable accommodation needs. Being close to the skytrain is just an added bonus for those simply wanting easy transit access to events downtown.

Yeah - GEC will have 12 floors dedicated to a hotel for short-term stays.

You’re right, the hotel will only serve students, faculty and administrators, but nonetheless it will still be providing accommodations needs.

The hotel will be open to anyone.

From the planning report:

• The 8th floor through to the 20th floor will comprise the hotel component of the proposed Education Centre tower, which will provide short-stay accommodation.
• The hotel will primarily serve as residences for international students attending short-term school programs, with semesters of no greater than 20 weeks (140 days).
• The hotel component will also provide rooms for traditional hotel guests staying for less than 7 days.
