I was in downtown Calgary for the first time in a long time last week and I was surprised to see the "Samsung Galaxy 5 Building" (Genco) is still standing.

I heard it described a number of times as being condemned, too unsafe for an engineering study and it will be demolished in the spring... well spring has come and gone a number of times since then so is anyone clear on it's present status?

Supposedly it is destined to become a 266 unit condo tower called Myriad, but I seriously doubt anyone is in a hurry to do that right now.

Have there been any office/commercial busts?

Apples to Oranges comparing office preleasing to preselling 200 units of condos. Does pulling an office development off the marketing indefinitely count? If so, pretty much every office development has busted with Place Ten and a few others being disasters.

Place 10 is the only significant "office bust" I've heard of. And The Orchid is the only residential development to return deposits.

It has been a remarkably steady market compared to every single past downturn.

So much better with less cold outside. It’s time for a dog walk and photos but from night angle.

Does anyone know what happened to the giant green Spider Beetle at the mechanic on 14th St. in Marda Loop? The property has ugly wooden fencing that's gone up and the beetle appears to be missing. If it is development I hope they keep the sculpture as it is such a landmark.

Business owner retired, developer bought the land and the beetle will be going back up at some point from what I read on it there was an article in the metro about it.

It's a development for sure. There's a thread for it at SRC. Small office building

Alice Lam, a property manager with Certus, confirmed that they are going to put the spider beetle on the roof of an existing property on 14 Street, north of its current location.

"We're getting it cleaned up and looking nice," said Lam. "We're not sure of the time frame but it should be a good surprise for the community
Interesting that it will be going on the roof. I hope this actually happens and it doesn't end up in a warehouse somewhere for the foreseeable future.

If they keep the original "spider" model - they should have one 4 times the size - to match the new building - as it will be 4 times the height.

Anyone know of future plans for the Kaffa/"The House" coffee shop site, and the Karma/Nawah/Mazaya hooka bar site, both in Marda Loop?

2138 33 Ave SW and 2137/2139 33 Ave SW?

There was discussion on this at Skyrise a while back, but I can’t recall which thread it was discussed in.

Just found it, it was pretty much people just asking the same question with no answer.

There's a sign for an Orange Fitness on the site of the old Mazaya. No idea about the other site. Hopefully something good!
