Roots could be interesting, but I would rather see a restaurant in that area (Tommy space). It is strange that the Wheeler one doesn't seem to be an outlet store anymore and now a second location at Champlain, not sure what to think of it. I like the Roots brand in general and it's a Canadian based company, but not owned.
I like that Hudson's Bay and Roots have a strong Canadiana persona, very important in the world nowadays.

I hope HBC is coming to Champlain.

PROOF!!!!!!!!

Image from January's PAC agenda.

16.9 acres - building site
154,000 sq ft - store size
849 parking spaces
Gas bar with four islands and 12 pumps (room for future expansion to 16 pumps).

The store will actually be backing on Granite Drive, and facing the TCH (for maximal visibility). The entrance will be on the SE corner of the store.

Plans for the new Canabis NB retail store to be built on the last vacant pad in the Mapleton Centre

The legend on the right hand side of the site plan is a little confusing. It implies that this building might contain both an NBLC store and a Canabis NB store. This may in fact be the case, as the more detailed site plan below indicates that this will be a "multi tenant building"

In any event, I expect construction to be expedited in the springtime so we should find out soon enough.

Current store is 117,000 sg ft, so about 31% larger.

According to a previous source, the current store has about 300 parking spaces, so a considerable improvement.

Yep, also my math was off. The new store will be 31% larger (corrected above).

It looks like they have fixed the two major issues that the current store has.

1. Parking, obviously
2. The entrance to the store is not near the main entrance to the parking lot. This causes such a traffic bottleneck at the current store. It's one of the main reasons I don't go there as often as I used to. The Saint John and Fredericton stores addressed this issue when they were built.

Now if they can do something about the general rudeness and selfishness of the customers in Costco, they'd be on to something.

Hopefully having Costco gas in Moncton will lower the prices a bit. This development is close to where I work, so I'm happy the gas bar will be going in there.

What I also find interesting is that the gas bar has space for 24 vehicles at a time for fuelling, with a proposed future expansion to 40 cars. After seeing how busy the Fredericton one is, this seems to be a better set up.

I guess Irving sells gas discounted, wholesale or whatever to Esso who then sells it back at a bit of a profit to Costco. Supposedly Irving to compensate for this is buying up gas stations here in Moncton and surrounding area to offset Costco's projected influence by competing through volume of scale, more gas stations more gas.

I don't have anything info to back this up other than 3rd hand knowledge/rumour at best.

I'm sure the Moncton gas market is dreading the Costco gas bar.

From what I've noticed in Fredericton, Costco literally sells the gas at cost (The wholesale cost that is). Whatever the price is on the market is what they sell; which is usually about 10 cents or so less than the NBPUB sets.

Because Costco's price for those two gas levels is so low, the rest of the stations have to go below the maximum price to stay competitive.

So the current max is 116.6 c/L, Costco at wholesale is about 109.9c/L, and the rest of the Freddy stations are usually literally splitting the difference and hovering around 113.9c/L.

Moncton will probably find its gas prices will match Freddys once Costco opens up its gas bar.

The Celebrate store at Wheeler Park is closing this weekend. I guess it was a Christmas "pop-up" store after all.

Now that it's official that Costco is leaving Wheeler Park, I wonder if it will make it difficult finding a replacement retailer........

If we talk about the property, and not the Building itself The Bay should look at a non Shopping centre location if Simons takes the Sears location as Speculated. Maybe that would keep Wheeler Park Centre going even with the loss of Costco in the area.

I’m pretty sure Costco owns their current store (and the land). There is speculation that they will maintain the building for warehousing until they can sell it.

To repurpose a Costco is difficult, because it's basically just a shell with steel walls, I think they will have a hard time putting it to another use.

Indeed. When Costco does sell this property, I'm sure the building will get torn down. I expect we will see a new retail plaza developed on this site.

If you look at the pdf in this link:

http://www.creit.ca/creit/medialibrary/C...itePlans/bu_15601(siteplan).pdf?ext=.pdf

You will see that CREIT doesn't actually own Costco, Kent or Superstore. The fate of the old Costco store is therefore in Costco's hands. I'm sure however that they would be delighted to sell this land as quickly as possible. Perhaps CREIT will buy it for redevelopment.
