^ Fort is a pretty shoddy street and its prospects aren't that great in the near term with Winnipeg Square building out in a way that sort of cements its secondary status. It's a bit like Ellice through the downtown area in that it feels like a street that functions mainly as a backlane.

Maybe if the Pyramid Cabaret found a way to make itself relevant as a night-time destination?

The area needs love, but it also needs consumer attention. 300 should help.

A lot of my friends actually go to the Pyramid Cabaret (I'm 20), it's been becoming more popular over the last year. Not saying it's the new "spot" but it has definitely become a viable option in terms of night life. I agree though, the area needs way more love. South Main is long overdue for a reno.

^ In my experience, interest in the Pyramid seems to peak around the age of 22 so I think you may be going through the normal generational cycle.

^ That's what I recall too. Pyramid was the one of the main places for university and post-university crowds who wanted rock/alternative over the more mainstream dance music at Monty's and such. Mid 80s to early 90s were some good times/bands there.

My wife and I met there at a NYE gig by the Blue Meanies 23 years ago.

Yeah Pyramid is still good - I'm surprised its seen as a early 20s place because most people I know who go there for shows are late 20s - mid 30s and since its still a 'pro' venue (as in it can provide required sound quality, accommodations for touring acts) it gets other crowds as well.

With a giant patio though, it doesn't spill onto the streets much (which is good in the long run) unless its particularly packed - even then its alone out there.

Garry takes some of its thunder with Windsor, Mitzy's, Club 200, Carbone's. With more people living down there it would help because right now as mentioned not sure it could support too much.

SIDE NOTE: Can someone tell me what the ****in deal is with 185 Smith?? The asbestos wasteland or whatever it is. I can't remember it ever having people in it !

There was a huge flood in the basement wrecking all the mechanical. Manitoba Housing has thrown in the towel. It's up for sale.

It wasn't that long ago...I'm actually surprised that it was as far back as April 2015 according to the article that 1ajs posted. I thought it was more recent than that.

Can anyone provide an educated guess as to the building's prospects? Is there any chance that someone could buy it and renovate it? Or is demolition more likely given the building's age and problems?

Anyone know what the land's worth, presuming the building is beyond repair, and taking into account the cost of demolishing a large and asbestos-filled building?

I dunno, Harvard seems to be a little slim in the due dilligence department, so maybe they have an outside shot

The plan is to hopefully start before April.

^ Perfect timing, just as TNS tops out, construction will begin on the next big tower. And not just any tower, but for the first time in 30 years... a NEW TALLEST!

Thanks all. That makes sense - I only moved downtown in May 2015 so I likely just missed any activity at the building.

Very surprised they even had new show units made. That means it was getting ready for people to move in again.

Would love a new build there personally. Hopefully just as tall.

^ 300 Main will be the new tallest.

If Sky City ever pans out, it would likely then eclipse 300 Main.

Yes, I believe SkyCity would be 575 feet whereas 300 Main would be 500 feet.
