Boston doesn't embed their tracks in pavement in similar situations (https://www.google.ca/maps/@42.3491301,-...AMa-n368R05uw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!5m1!1e2) and while a quick google search turns up lots of stories of cars at Queens Quay, Union, and Spadina stations, you don't see anything about cars in the Green line tunnels.

The punishment for drivers who do end up in the tunnels is not severe enough.. A few hundred bucks of a ticket is not a fair penalty for all the disruption they cause. Should be a 30 day license suspension on first offense, 1 year on subsequent.

I think it should be added to the list of offences classified as stunt driving. Maybe show some leniency for those who legitimately make a wrong turn and try to get out, but if they are trying to drive past the paved section, throw the book at them.

The definition could be something like "attempting to drive on unpaved railway tracks without prior authorization of the railway."

Stunt Driving tickets have the following penalties;

• Immediate seven (7) day licence suspension
• Immediate seven (7) day vehicle impoundment
• Minimum fine of two thousand ($2000.00) dollars
• licence suspension of up to two years
• Seven (7) demerit points
• Imprisonment for a term of not more than six (6) months
• Dramatic increase of insurance rates
• Second conviction drivers licence suspension of up to ten (10) years

I think stupid (or drunk) drivers are a big part of problem, but the whole thing is terribly designed. There is no fencing, no bollards, very understated "do not enter" signs. This is a city where the light rail vehicles normally share lanes with cars and people are accustomed to driving on tracks, it can be very confusing to somebody not familiar with the area. This almost always happens when the streetcars aren't running, so the second time this happened they should have put gates that are closed when the streetcar isn't in service.

If you look at streetview (click on the picture I attached above) you will see there are gates they can manually close. Not sure if they do or not.

None of the pictures of stranded vehicles that pop up from time to time look like they were damaged smashing through a gate, so I suspect it isn't used much.

If it weren't for Rideau being so far behind, it really would looks like they'd make the date. It's a shame that the sinkhole happened there (if it had to happen at all). If the sinkhole had been, say, between Parliament and Lyon they could have probably opened part of the line on time. Opening it to uOttawa wouldn't have a lot of value (except for Ottawa U students).

I would still prefer they introduced some sort of pilot project with whatever part of the line is operational. The University alone is a large driver of ridership and it would drastically improve access to the train station.

Service to and from the train station is atrocious right now. Be nice to reconnect Cyrville and Lees to the network after the shaft those neighbourhoods have gotten, too.

yep ! Get it up and running between Blair and uOttawa.
The west side would require interruptions to work, and the Lyon and Parl stations would interfere with ongoing access for work.

So... leave the buses running, and get the east side up, and pilot a lot of the bugs out early !

The other advantage would be to offer an earlier improvement from the east to southeast.

Travelling from, say, Orleans to Billings Bridge is significantly slower with the Transitway closures and will become significantly faster once the Confederation Line is open between Blair and Hurdman.

Are you talking about using the section east or west of Rideau? If it is east, then it might be possible. If it is west, maybe they can't because they would need to have trains go through that station.

It also may not be possible due to how the system is set up.

East of Rideau. I mean since the buses would still have to run, they'd probably run the trains at 15 minute frequency or so. I guess it all depends on what RTG says at the end of the month on how far behind they are. We have an advantage compared to Kitchener-Waterloo, where they have a finished line, but no trains to run on them (3 delivered but not yet done a self-powered test yet)

Depending on how far done Rideau is, perhaps they could run through the station without stopping until completion. This was done at Montreal's Acadie station on the Blue Line back in the 80s for a few months.

The line (tracks, wires, signals) between uOttawa and Blair is done and the stations in that stretch are all near-completion, and they've assembled around two-thirds of the train sets. There's a crossover between Rideau and uOttawa just before the tunnel portal; they could easily use that to start service between uOttawa and Blair in the absence of the rest of the line. Heck... given how close that section is they could probably have a uOttawa-Blair service up and running in time for the spring service change at the end of April.

They couldn't really cancel any buses in favour of the LRT with that alignment yet due to the lack of connectivity downtown, so ridership would be pretty low, but that would actually make it a perfect test--get out the kinks with a low amount of riders.

The tunnel and its stations are probably going to catch up over the winter since they're not hampered by the weather. Tunney's Pasture seemed to be the farthest behind back in September but all the heavy stuff seems to be done. I'm still hoping to be surprised in the spring

Definitely electrical, definitely not good.

A perfect example of the bugs that can only be worked out by powering up and running live in ALL conditions prior to running customer service. Repeat - operate (run) in ALL conditions of weather and operations - bad rain, bad snow, bad freezing rain, bad cold, bad hot, etc.
